I think you'll find the word in "cach".

Of Celtic origin, derived from the Irish "cach" or poo. Same word in Welsh.

In principle you are of course correct...they are just bits of painted plastic. However...they are collectible, and like anything that is collectible...Artwork, old cars, stamps, ephemera etc,etc, you could say the same about that. Bits of paint on some canvas, bit of metal with wheels, bit of pape...
