Subbuteo Pet Hates

Post by SIDAZALEL » 09 Mar 2019, 18:27

Hi All,

Wondered if this may be an interesting one, what are your Subbuteo Pet Hates, mine to start us off is,why oh why did they put teams second colours on same bases as first choice colours, thus making them useless,an example being West Ham ref 7 & 79

Regards Simon

Yes, it does seem rather daft, although the 79 looks very nice in its own right.

Perhaps it is possible to put some neat paint or ink markings on the discs, to distinguish them from a Burnley or Villa.

Subbuteo snooker.

The only good thing I can say about it, is that I only played it twice; thankfully. It is poor.

Na - a 79 on yellow and black would just look carp.

Match the kit to the base is what I say.

Would the ref 79 not have been better if on an all light blue base, agree re matching bases to kits, can never understand why ref 81 on black/red or red/black when surely black/white or white/black would be better.

Discoloured (i.e. yellowed) white plastic. :(

Not good; although, to be fair, the majority of heavies haven't yellowed at all. (I bought a team recently from a fellow forum member and it's just about as white as the day it was sold by the shop, 45 years ago).

People who turn up to tournaments and expect you to play to the rules they use at home.

All of the above, except the fishing game. :D

And also the really late Heavyweight boxes with the slide out tray. Hate 'em. Complete rubbish compared to the early 70's long box.

The plastic inserts/trays in teams and box sets during the 90’s after they used polystyrene. Absolute rubbish.
Reference labels which were not positioned correctly on 90’s teams. All team names should be visible on front and bottom end of box. Not some on the reverse of box.
Reference labels on 90’s teams that were torn along the bottom back edge, allowing the team to be taken out from the bottom end.
The hanging flap being cut off on 90’s team boxes.
Hand painted/written numbers being added to players.
Players having bases changed to different type or combo
Dealers/sellers putting wrong version/variation of team in a reference box to increase sale.

This. "Sub-boo-teo" sounds twee and unnatural to me...who pronounces a "u" in the middle of a word as "oo" anyway?
Here are my other ones:
Rattlers
Zombies
Dishonest eBay traders
The sheer difficulty in finding/buying Subbuteo in Australia
The fact that when the Subbuteo I wanted was freely available brand-new in the shops (ie.the 1970s), I had limited pocket money with which to buy it...and now - when could afford as much as I want - the shops no longer sell it.
Football was NOT invented in 1992. It was in 1973, the year I bought my first Subbuteo set...
