I would imagine that it's exactly what it says in your topic title ... such that the buyer could stitch it to a shirt /jacket /bag as required.

Thanks Ralph for stating the obvious, which I now I already did in my topic title but I was hoping for a little bit more background history on the badge if possible.

It's an image of the trophy on a Union Jack ?

(As seen on lots of period merchandise )

Sold as a sew on patch as you know so ............

Where's the mystery ? ......

Sorry I don't have a more interesting answer ...

Strangely so far neither has anyone else :)

My guess is it would have been for mums to sew on to nipper's red football shirts, Umbro or not.
A little bit of "after the fact merchandising" to capitalise on our win, so to speak.
Bear in mind this was a good few years before Admiral changed everything we know about playing strips ..

Ralph why the disdainful looking face, are showing a sign of contempt or even boredom about me or the topic, but surly it was your good self that brought my original question to that level, I was merely asking if anyone could give me a sensible answer about the badge, you must lean to lighten up a little, after all other people do have views you know. :lol!: :lol!: :lol!:

are showing ?
surly ?
lean to lighten ?

... What angle do you suggest ?

I answered a question with the only answer possible and got sarcasm from a chap who doesn't recognise either The Jules Rimet Trophy or the Union flag ... What is the point ?

Goodbye.
