Liverpool got the idea for this kit, from when they played South Liverpool FC in a pre season match many moons ago.
It is a plain kit, but 81 in all the different figures produced, has something about it

I could be wrong but...

Liverpool started using the white shirt black shorts from about 1931, but this incarnation of South Liverpool only came into existence in 1935. The first South Liverpool F.C. (previously African Royal), relocated and became New Brighton A.F.C. in the early 1920s

Here's a picture of the original South Liverpool team before the relocation:

According to the South Liverpool FC site, the white shirts black shorts were used from 1945 onwards as they were unable to acquire their traditional maroon and gold shirts due to post war restrictions.

Apologies for going off topic - it's a lovely ref 81

I should been more clear, oops, it was the white/black/red combo I was referring to, it was Bill Shankly who got it used, as opposed to the various socks combos of the previous years.
I got to Holly Park a couple of times to see the original South Liverpool play

According to
http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Liverpo ... ange-g.gif
Liverpool played with this kit in 1972/73 than turned to white socks.
Season 72/73 it is just when range up to 81 was released by Subbuteo....

They wore White with Red trim Black shorts and either Red or White socks or Red/White hoops on and off from 1931 ... they official change kit obviously had White socks as the home ones were Red or Red/White hoops ?

Used to pass Holly Park regularly on the train - you'd see the team name in big bold letters on the white wall. Gone now, replaced with a train station (South Liverpool Parkway)

Puskas played there in 1967 - fantastic story:

It was a fantastic old fashioned ground, just a shame it was in the middle of a very bad area.
