collecting rare items...someone here ?

Postby pozen » 21 Feb 2017, 10:09

I know many collectors teams, few collectors of box set and very few collectors of rare sets produced in the 50's like journey into space, speedway and motor racing. Someone knows a few collectors of these sets? I have always been in love with the history of these sets...

Has anyone got or seen the 'Paint Your Own sets' that were available?

I remember in the early 1980's you could buy blank lightweight teams with bases in a SSG box to paint up
It all seems very easy, this revolution game
But when you start to really play things won't be quite the same
Your intellectual theories on how it's going to be
Don't seem to take into account the true reality

They were sold for a short period, my mate Trevor started it at SSG, not a great success sales wise, which was a surprise

Can't remember those mate...not seen them documented anywhere either. Glad you mentioned it, otherwise lost in the midst of time.

Surprised considering how many normal teams ended up being painted over by kids. Was it just Red and blue bases available, hence the lack of sales?

They were mainly sold by mail order, it was his idea, but it never took off, and as you say Ian many other teams were painted over by folk.
Maybe it was after the glory days of the 1970's, as in 1982 Subbuteo was very close to being dropped by Waddingtons. Mainly due to the failure of the new products/ box designs made for the 1981 catalogue, they lost a lot of money.
So new ideas were needed.

Cheers for that Paul. I'll have to look back through all my old ephemera, as I can't remember ever seeing it being advertised for sale, or if I did, my memory has faded lol

There was a sheet given to stockists, about A4 size and left near displays for folk to pick up.
They tried to use a lot of the left over Zombies in them

Ah right...you're talking about the later teams that 'Tel mentioned.

I was referring to the 'U Paint' teams from the mid to late 60's. Crossed wires Paul lol

As seen on this page mate... http://www.peter-upton.co.uk/submisc.htm

There is an entry on the Peter Upton site for ' The U Paint Outfit '. Apparently sold between 1965 and 1968. The sets had two sets of players still on the sprue, some GLOSS paints ! and blue and red bases. Also included were two of the cheap plastic goals and a large ball. The set cost was approx the same as a single painted team. There is a photo of the set on the site.

Indeed there is mate...I included the link in my above post.

Rubbish photo though isn't it.

Would be nice to see how it was led out, and the gloss paint pots/tubes? If any survive.

Also...I thought the HW figure arrived in 1967...not 65? So I'm guessing the OHW was used at some point in the set?

Guess what - Pete has one.

Balloon missing - obviously, they don't last 60 years  but it's a quality piece of kit.

Atmosphere on the inside of the planet - it's an interesting concept. :-k
