OHW Chile Named

Post by Grandad » 09 Jun 2017, 17:53

Like some of the named teams that have been appearing lately. Found the following OHW named Chile team with 4 other numbered OHW teams in Cumbria Collectors Shop last week on holiday! All had some damage /repairs - but to be expected I think. Have also included picture of 1 other from same lot 'Juventus (34) - so a good find for my collection.
First time in over 30 years that I've seen Subbuteo in this particular shop too!

What about the other three numbered teams ?

The Chile would have been part of the 1966 World Cup series. They were in North Korea's group with Portugal and Italy. Played in the North East at Middlesbrough and Newcastle.

Hi, thanks for info on Chile. And for for asking about other teams!! Have attached photos as follows - Stoke (4), Fulham, England (10) - white bases, & Blackburn (31).
I've never seen named club teams, only numbers on OHW boxes - were there any I wonder?

Oh yes of course. There was some reason Newcastle wasn't used but I can't remember what it was.

EDIT

Here we are ....

As the tournament had unfolded, eight grounds were used to stage the 1966 World Cup, with Group D giving football fans in the North East the opportunity to see some of the world’s finest.

Yet this was not without controversy. Originally, St James’ Park was due to be used, but with a question mark over whether Newcastle City Council would renew the lease on the stadium, the matches were moved to Middlesbrough’s Ayresome Park.

Boro’s ground was given 8,500 temporary seats and, in the end, there was room for 46,000 people, with 21,000 of them under cover.

The other ground used was Sunderland’s Roker Park where 9,000 temporary seats were installed to give a final capacity of 63,000, with 25,000 covered.

Whilst the 50 references available in 1966 included decent approximations to nearly all the sides in the Finals, SSG brought out this named selection to include (what was intended to be) the correct shirts, shorts and socks combinations. Surprisingly few of these 16 kits were actually in the mainstream 1-50 catalogue.
