Subbuteo T Shirt

Postby cityfan247 » 18 Nov 2017, 19:35

Went to the Grimsby v Carlisle game today.

Another disappointing afternoon for the Mariners and another game without a goal (that's 5 games in row for Town)

The highlight of the day was discovering this in the Club Shop.

Interesting that Grimsby are selling that with the 'Subbuteo' branding. I wonder if they have a license or permission to use it?

I got asked to supply Forest Green Rovers merchandise shop, with replica Subbuteo teams. They wouldn't touch it without permission or license to use the 'Subbuteo' name.

I've seen the same pattern as the Grimsby shirt elsewhere this season

There were a couple of different Subbuteo design t shirts on sale in the GTFC shop.

here are the others

It has Subbuteo (Hasbro) tags so presumably it is under licence.

When I went to St.Andrews Birmingham, they were selling Subbuteo figure keyrings as "retro footballer" keyrings!!! Obviously no permission sought there.

Did they have the word 'Subbuteo' on the key ring?

If they didn't and it was just an image of a player on a base, they wouldn't need it. It's only if the word 'Subbuteo' is used.

I wanted to use the term Retro table football figures'...but they wanted 'Subbuteo' used...it's still a powerful draw.

No word Subbuteo on it. Just retro footballer on advertising.

Town never actually played in a ref 38 kit though......another Subbuteo idiosyncrasy.

I never owned an original ref 38 and ,despite being born and raised in the Grimsby area , I dont recall seeing it in the local shops and certainly the ref 38 was not marketed locally as THE Grimsby Town team. I would suspect most kids at the time like myself would have seen the ref 8 as a closer match to our heroes. Though red socks have featured more often than not down the years. I do like the ref 38 kit though and picked one up off ebay a couple of years back. Unfortunately a previous owner had overpainted (in gloss!!) the shorts black to make it more realistic. Red socks are original and in tact.

They had red shorts and socks in 1962 just before the ohw release Mark...but it was with a plain white shirt. I think this is how SSG made the mistake. I think they got promoted that year too...probably why SSG added it.

38 dates from 1963 and I would suggest is simply a corruption of the Town kits 59-63 .. check them out

You can imagine SSG write to Grimsby asking about the kit .. they simply reply it is White and Black with Red shorts .. just flick through any yearbook/playfair whatever before the modern era the kit descriptions are often vague and nothing like the actual kit
