Yeh think Ralph and ian have nailed it with regards to the red shorts. Grimsby did wear them at the beginning of the 60's for a couple of seasons.

http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Grimsby ... y_Town.htm

Ralph's explanation makes sense as Subbuteo would likely have done the kit based on a description rather than seeing the kit. As Grimsby traditionally wore stripes it's easy for Subbuteo to make that assumption. Voila a ref 38.

The mistakes and anomalies that Subbuteo made with kits and team names back in the 60's and 70's would not happen these days with wealth of info available at the touch of a button. As I have said before though it all adds to the charm of the product.

Pity Grimsby never actually played in the ref 38 kit.....i like it and think it would have been a unique variation on black/white stripes kits.

Great pic Ian.

That's the 62-63 season team in the old division 2.

A young Graham Taylor is far left on front row.

It'd be nice if the player was ref 38.
Town never actually played in a ref 38 kit though......another Subbuteo idiosyncrasy.
Irrelevant !! 38 has always been Grimsby.

Just like 26 is always Drumcondra.

What have facts got to do with it ?

Just making the point that collectors will always refer to a 26 as Drumcondra.

Not Leeds United - which is why it came into the catalogue originally.

In Grimsby tonight myself for their game against Swindon.

Saw the items in the club shop, quite prominent too. Good work.

Leeds Utd in the 1950s. By the heavyweight era it was Bangor (NI) and Drumcondra (Ire). (1952-88)

This team is listed with blue shorts from 1970-71 until 1972-73, but reverts back to black with the illustrated catalogues. The version with blue shorts then becomes reference 121

so ffs is it Drum OR Scum?
