Non League teams

Post by Timbo85 » 25 Feb 2018, 14:47

Just wondering if anyone knows what non-league sides were officially represented by Subbuteo through the years? I see Bishop Auckland teams knocking around and I think there was also Barnet as 'Southern League' on an old catalogue, were there any others?

As far as I know those were the only 2 non league clubs listed in the catalogues.

Of course Bradford (ie Bradford PA) ref 36 and Barrow ref 18 were League clubs who later dropped out (same for Workington and Southport).

I have seen a version of Hereford Utd that came in a typed named box and did not appear in the catalogue. Someone else on here will be able to say if that was produced whilst they were non-league (due to their FA Cup exploits 71-72) or whether they have gained entry to the league by then 1972-73.

There were numerous done as special orders for various stockists, Rhyl, where I lived, was always done for Lightfoots, a big toy shop back in the day.

Aye, references 33 and 35, two nice looking kits. Shame there weren't more non-league teams listed in the Subbuteo catalogues back in the Original and Classic Heavyweight eras.
Course, back in the olden days (i.e before the formation of the Premier league), it was extremely difficult for non-league teams to gain league status.

It was always all white with black trims, and a couple of times, with black shorts. the Specials had a black dot for a badge as well

Found another- Ref 030 - Burton Albion (non-league throughout their history until 2009). Pic below from a 72/73 catalogue showing all three (only Barnet given their league in brackets strangely)..

Well spotted, Timbo.

And, rather interestingly, the catalogue above shows reference 32, and reference 34, with blacks shorts.

I often used to wonder, back in the 70's, what the hell reference 60 was all about. Info back then wasn't as readily available.

I used the catalogue as a reference until I was about 11 when I started collecting football memorabilia properly and and realised that SSG had the 90% target and 10% allowance for error the wrong way around .. a fine exemplar of the efficiencies of 1970's British Industry

I picked this up a few months ago...of course essentially a Ref 6 but I assume this was just when Cambridge United came into the league.....

Hard to say as they played in All White with Black and Gold trim between 69 and 72 (first league season 70-71) .. so that could be either a reflection of them as a non-league side in the late sixties or the post 72 kit as a league club .. rare though I bet ?

Anybody know when Cambridge United was first listed in the Subbuteo catalogues. I haven't got my 1970's catalogues to hand, so I can't check them myself, unfortunately.
1972 is the right kit for that box type, and unlisted in the catalogue would explain the typed name strip.
