Identifying Lightweight and heavyweight

Post by DallasCowboy » 18 Mar 2018, 17:52

Hi,

A bit inexperienced with the collecting looking for thoughts please about some teams I got in a recent job lot.

The red team is in pretty poor condition, does this look like a repaint? I wondered if it was originally all white.
The red and blue one I thought could be crystal palace 19, but looks a bit different to others I've seen online..
The Blackburn one I'm thinking is a repaint? Maybe was originally a team like man city?

. Yep, they're repaints, DC. The green base figure is a crouching goalkeeper from the interchangeable goalkeepers set (mid 70-ish).

Are you playing, collecting or both, mate ??

Cheers Paul. I've played a few events before in the past , but I'm not really good enough and don't get time to practice, so Im just collecting now. But probably got a tiny collection compared to some of you guys!

Just interested which particular era of subbuteo did you originally start with, DC ??

Also, if you're near to Sheffield and/or Stoke, there are a couple of fairs coming up in the near future. There's usually a few of the guys on here who attend these meets. They'll give you some advice about the joys and pitfalls of collecting subby.

Thanks for the info Paul - I'm born in 1981, so it was lightweights that I collected as a kid. I have mostly lightweights now and it's only recently that I started to pick up some heavyweights. It's really hard to pick teams up on eBay though, it's so competitive. I have managed to get two job lots though lately which were collection only. It seems it's easier to pick teams up this way. I have the Sheffield date in my calendar!

As I'm never going to collect every team, I was thinking of starting to buy single figures for a nice display at home. I've seen a few other people's pictures and it looks great.

Thanks Adrian.

If you're looking only for genuine, original teams then be careful with the heavies, DC. Especially, since you were born in '81, not having any experience or memories of buying and playing during that era makes it a bit harder to recognise these teams. (It can still be a minefield for people who did play and buy during that era, btw).
Sheffield is well worth it. Good luck.

The red & blue striped kit is an overpainted Ref 42 Chelsea, looks quite nice though.

Thanks Weare.. Yeah I think you're right. Also think the red and white could be Leeds 21 and the blue/white Man city Lw 621

It's good fun trying to figure out what teams they were originally. When I said to my girlfriend it's like being a police detective I got a funny look :lol!:
