Heavyweights - Number 77 mystery

Postby drt1607 » 12 May 2018, 08:49

Hello All,

This is my first ever post. I'm a writer-broadcaster working on a Subbuteo-themed radio series. I grew up in the late 70s and eighties playing subbuteo on the floor, leading to a lifetime of back trouble.

I've been trying, via social media, to unravel a bit of a mystery to which I've found no answer. I've even emailed Peter Upton but reading through posts on here, I understand he's unlikely to respond to emails.

My query concerns number 77 in the late 70s, which was listed as Wolves, Dundee Utd and Newport, among others. My oldest catalogue is from 1979.

My query is this:
From the '79-80 season, Derby County launched a new Patrick away kit, orange shirt, black shorts, during their relegation season. I would like to know if anyone can confirm if from 1980 onwards, number 77 was also listed as Derby 2nd in Subbuteo. No one has been able to confirm this for me after weeks of trying to find an answer and one of the show's episodes is dependent on establishing whether 77 was ever Derby 2nd.

Appreciate any thoughts or links that might be able to help.

Hi
without sitting down to confirm the fact, I am fairly certain it was not listed in any catalogue as DCFC 2nd kit, in that era Subbuteo rarely listed 2nd kits, a few were listed but not many at all

Thanks for replying.

I suspect you're right.
I know there are numbers such as 168 which in the '79 catalogue were listed as Chelsea 2nd, but with the yellow away kit being as popular in the late 70s as the black away kit is in the modern game, I'm sure that by 1980, 168 was also Forest 2nd and perhaps served other yellow away-kit wearing teams.

The 168 was done for Oxford, and like ref 115 it co-incided with some away kits of that era

That's very useful to know. Appreciated.
It is weird how when there was a kit, such as the '79-81 Derby 2nd that was identical to an existing Subbuteo team number, Subbuteo often didn't add it to the team number.

Not really.

Accuracy was not their strong point.
