Swedish celluloid set

Post by SweSaint » 30 Nov 2018, 08:36

I found an old set on Swedish ebay, which is quite rare as the game never caught on here.

The set was advertised as being in worn condtion and no pitch was included (it might be one of those sets without one), but out of interest I wanted to have look at it and was the only bidder.

The set arrived yesterday with the following contents:

* Worn box, about the size of a regular shoe box, with all text in English.

* Complete red and blue card teams. Two players with missing head. Most players glued into place. A coule of players repaired with sellotape.

* Goalkeepers and rods in good condition.

* Goals with brown nets in good condition.

* Two non-subbuteo balls.

* Rules and instructions badly translated to Swedish (grammar and spelling errors), probably done using a dictionary.

* The numbers on the numbers sheet had been used (still on the players shirts, only missing on one) but the sheet was still there and the players positons were given in Swedish rather than English.

* A letter from the Swedish import firm mentioning that those that set up a club could order teams in various colours via them.

I looked at Peter Upton's site to try and find out which years these were sold, but couldn't really determine. Does anyone have an idea? I can try to post pictures next week if anyone is interested. I'm thankful for any help.

Here are the photos that were included in the auction.

I can take a couple more if anyone is interested. Just let me know.

After examining the contents closer after posting the photos last night, I have to correct my initial post. The players seem to be the earlier type of celluloid.

I received the set on Thursday and just went by the description made by the seller when I started the topic on Friday. Beginners mistake... Sorry! :-\

Moderators, can you change the topic, please?

When I first saw the photos, I also thought they possibly looked like celluloid teams, so you may have purchased two stronger teams than you thought. As a recent convert, though, I am certainly not an expert on such matters, I simply appreciate and enjoy the type of game they play.

Celluloid without a doubt .. the easiest way for an inexperienced flats buyer to spot the difference on a photo whatever the quality (and this one is fine) is to look at the outline of the figure , A card figure will generally display a much thicker black outline unless the original owner has the eyes of a hawk and the scissor skills of a highly skilled artisan.

Nice find I'd change most of the blue figures though when you get chance looking at the pic ..quite a few short ones there

Thanks for replying. I'll get some more detailed photos.

Given that the players are glued, is there any good way to remove them and still being able to get replacements?

I"ve never really taken to the squared shouldered figures so as a consequence I don't have any I'm afraid or I'd gladly let you have some but yes they can be removed as long as they haven't been stuck in with super glue .. use pliers grip the figure with the nose of the pliers as close to the base as you can and pull ... use a needle to clear any remnants out of the slot.... all depends on the glue used ...

The World Cup was in Sweden in 1958 - possibly SSG saw an opportunity for expansion in thed lead-up to the tournament.
