Early 70's World Cup Box Set

Post by cityfan247 » 22 Mar 2019, 12:21

Just seeking some advice from you guys about the teams found in the early 70's WC box sets. Specifically the ones that came with the 'modern' green fencing and white floodlights (replacing the red ones found in the original 1970 set)

I believe there were 2 variations. An updated 1970 version . It still had 'NEW" World Cup on the box and still had the wired GK's and usually came with the C122 goals. Did this only ever come with Italy and Brazil alongside England?

The updated version for 1974 dropped the word 'NEW' on the box and came with the red and blue netting WC goals (which had been introduced in 1972) and i think was the first box set to drop the wired GK's and feature those with the familiar green plastic rods. Did this only ever come with West Germany and Holland alongside England? Again were the any other team variations?

Appreciate your thoughts chaps.

thanks

Ian, both WC Editions and Munich Editions had W Germany and Holland in them after the 74 WC

Thanks Paul

So am I right in thinking the set with the WC goals and plastic GK rod was after 1974 and that would only have Holland W Germany & England.

So the Italy, Brazil and England version would only appear in those with 'NEW" on the box and C122 goals and wired GK ie pre 1974.

As far as the teams are concerned the dividing line is the actual 74 WC.

Last question then.. what year did the WC goals and plastic GK rods first appear in this set? Was it before 1974?

There's a World Cup edition boxset on Ebay at the moment. Comes with :-
3 teams; England, West Germany and Holland.
Standard goals, not World Cup goals.
Wired goalies, not plastic goalies.

I had bid on that but am hesitant to go higher for that reason. Hence my questions.

Aye, I thought that was reason why you were asking, Ian.

There's another one just been listed that looks ok-ish. Starting bid of 120 quid, though. Box lid's not reight good.

Cheers guys.

Yep seen that one Paul but as you say the box is a bit battered ...a bit too tatty for the price imo. But looks like it has the correct teams (WG, Hol, Eng) for a set with plastic rods and WC goals. Though I suppose in that era, as we have established many times, whatever the 'rules' were regarding Subbuteo collecting there are normally exceptions and variations.

Surely the box is everything.

All the contents would be (relatively) easy to replace.

A few years ago, I was talking to a bloke who'd been working on restoring the "Flying Scotsman".

"How much of this loco dates back to 1923 ?" I asked him.

After a bit of thought, he said, "probably just the frame."

Maybe "Trigger's Brush" might be a better name,

A mint box pushes price way up on these. "Trigger's brush" contents aren't really a problem.

This is mine, bought about 7 years ago for £35.00. Complete with great contents and very good box. With Germany, Holland and Brazil.
