Vintage Days War Time Table Soccer - Review

Postby Gullseye » 07 Nov 2012, 21:45

Just received my set. It seems that the design of the sets are all slightly different. I note that the goals have been improved from the sets seen on the previous thread. I really like the box and the presentation is very nice. Have not played a game yet as I'm still reading the rule book, but its clear that the cards play a big part in the process of the game. This introduces scenario's which could happen during the course of a game and therefore adds interest but I assume does interrupt the flow compared to Subbuteo. The general play is a lot different than Subbuteo, no restriction on number of times a player can flick the ball, you can flick other players forward off ball when attacking, rules on dribbling and tackles, defenders stay in their own half apart from centre half who can come up for corners. As in the old days injured players carried on regardless and there are ' injured' players with the set that get brought on which are a little unbalanced and have a material on the bottom of the base which hinders them.

I bought a set with Brighton and Crystal Palace. Teams and officials are well painted. A few photo's here not taken in daylight so not great.

At the risk of looking like a right doofus I assume it comes with a seperate pitch and the one in the box is for presentation purposes :? It looks a nice quality product. Thanks for posting Gully.

Yes that is just for presentation purposes. The set does not come with a pitch as you can play on a Subbuteo pitch, although they do make one which they of course recommend you buy. I think the one they make has a rougher texture but without playing the game yet I can't really comment on whether you would need one.

How is the pitch they recommend supplied? Is it rolled up like an astro or pre-mounted on a board with the terraces like the photo's on the previous topic from flick2kick? What prices are we talking?

Apparently it is all part of the stadium, but they can make a separate pitch which comes on a board. When I enquired they suggested that they made one in two sections which would be easier to despatch. I did not get around to asking about prices as I wanted to check the game out first.

I think you may be right Spud, probably the same stuff used for the box pitch. This would obviously make the ball run slower which would simulate the older pitches. The balls do work very well, there is a light one and a heavier one for bad weather conditions. Not a lot of difference in the weight but the heavier one is a lot slower. The goals are very nice and have a sturdy support around the base which keeps them in place. They are real netting which is coated in a plastic like substance that makes them rigid

Will let you know how it plays when I've had the chance to play a few games.

Very nice indeed. Love the detail.
Often wondered if Subby is playable on scenic grass?
Would the act of flicking ( nail scuff ) render it pretty bare in a relatively short time?

Great for action shots though!
