Wow, lot's of love for Japan on here.

Favourite album for me is Gentlemen Take Polaroids.

Difficult to pick a favourite track from that album, but if I had to, it would be 'My New Career'.

I can't believe that such a short soul/pop song can have such a complex, layered arrangement and yet sound so beautifully simple.

That's songwriting genius, I suppose.

Four minutes of absolute, aural bliss.

Good question Jon. Japan did go a through a big transformation. I didn't get into them until 1980, when I was 13.

I think Quiet Life was the first Japan track I ever heard. Me and my mates did listen to their back catalogue but nothing grabbed me like Polaroids. As much as I loved Tin Drum, I think they were at their peak then.

The only band that sprang to mind was The Cult (formerly 'Southern Death Cult' and 'Death Cult') who went from 'Post Punk / Goth / Singing Weird poo about Native American Indians Even Though You're From Bradford' to 'American-Style Stadium Rock Band a la Whitesnake'

I was gobsmacked at that one. Don't get me wrong I loved 'em in the early days and saw Death Cult at The Powerhouse in Birmingham in '84 (I think).

yes thats a fair shout.
i am a massive cult fan too and i love most of their stuff but they changed too. still think their change was mostly gradual.

love is a brilliant album and their more recent stuff is good too.
one of their best albums was "the cult" in 1994 just as they were splitting up

alien is my fave japan track but i prefer sylvian early solo. hes gone pretty rubbish now and too experimental.

"some kind of fool" is brilliant

Spoke re Death Cult and Southern Death Cult...saw the Cult early on around 84 at Aylesbury Civic Hall...loads of flat top lads there, lots of trouble.
We were all still punk and so were loads of the old audience, so it went off big time, gig stopped 4 times.
Black Elvis 2000 supported and you had to see him to believe it ffs
Gods Zoo still a fave...
you want change look at U2, from punk to perfect to sh i t in 7 years

and pmsl from Bradford...obv twinned with some early american native settlement :lol!:

Mark got to agree about Ultravox comment about Ure and Foxx . Magazine was pretty Avant-gard??? I thought. Foxx is a totally different kind of vocalist to multi instrumentalist Ure. Ure being more accessible I think. He also played in Thinn Lizzy as a stand in .
Sickage I loved the First two Cult albums Dreamtime and Love classics.......I used to go to the Powerhouse on a Wednesday as it was Alternative music night. Cracking eve of music. The dammed ,clash,Pil,Cult,Billt Idol, Souixie, Alien Sex Fiend, Nephlin, Frankie, Testtubes,Explioted, Sigue, anti nowhere, etc.
Loving early Japan top stuff adolescence sex is a classic. Focus there was a band from London called Girl who had the same rawness as early japan. [ Phil Collin from Def Leps was in the band]. It was kinda gay punk? LOL.
