1949 box set

Post by Jon Rosten » 05 Jun 2019, 10:35

Folks
Picked this old set up today
The small box set with players in it isn’t that unusual but what is new to me is the larger box which appears as if it’s supplied by Subbuteo but could be someone at home cutting and pasting to make labels on their own box

Maybe the dept 66 the lodge address on the front label suggests it was put together in the early days by Subbuteo themselves
Any views or info welcome

The big box label looks very much like some previous owner's attempt to label a big box to keep all his Subbuteo stuff in.

The Lodge - is that your grandma's address, Mark ? :?

It looks like a homemade label but who knows? Another intriguing Subbuteo story....
Cheers

yeh I'd agree with home-made....wonder where the bottom line with P Adolph etc etc came from though ...unusual to have such a FULL address? quite a large size and looks to have some age to it

If you look at early adverts in the 40,50,60s for Subbuteo they often added a dept number to the address. There seem to be many depts.

I'm guessing in the true nature of early SSG it was more for effect, than numerous departments.

The cut out paperwork on the bottom of the box looks like something a child would have done...taken from Subbuteo adverts at the time.

Hope that helps.

yeh spud...though its the SIZE of the bottom row of letters that confuses me (& therefore the length too!)

And that end red & white sticker is unusual too

I’m inclined to think it’s a home made cut out by purchaser but the ones on the end are actually very well
Cut out straight so I wouldn’t think it was a child who did it .

The red and white one on the ends is actually two separate cut outs - one white and one red.
They could have been cut out from an early price list I suppose - top and bottom

Having departments was - and still is - a way of monitoring the efficiency of your advertising.

If a lot of folk reply to Dept 1 and nobody to Dept 2, stop spending money on Dept 2 advertising. It's not working.
