Goodison Park 1985

Postby Edgreen677 » 06 Jun 2017, 20:14

Hi All

I think I have found this site just at the right time.

When I was much much younger I would spend all my spare time with my Subbuteo set. I would put any local football on the radio and recreate the game on the subbuteo pitch as it happened. When there was no games I would commentate on my own which always ended with Everton overturning a defeat and Kevin Sheedy hitting the winner in the last seconds.

It's been a long time since I saw that subbuteo set but this Christmas my mum brought me round my second ever Subbuteo set for Christmas. At first I didnt have my childhood enthusiasm for ironing a 5 year old bobbly pitch but within hours of it being sat under the tree I left the wife in front of Shrek 3 and took the Subbuteo into the next room.

After 20 minutes it was obvious what I had to do! I had to create a stadium. I had dreampt of a stadium as a kid and tried to make some out of lego once but my brother took it back quick smart... Then the question was what type of stadium. The Subbuteo grandstands had always seemed so slick that I just had to include them no I had the chance. but if I was going to build my dream stadium it has to be something my 7 year old self would have been amazed by. There it was... I had to re-create the greatest night at Goodison Park, The 1985 cup winners cup semi final victory over Lothar Mathaeus and his Bayern Munich side.

I will be using as much actual subbuteo equipment as I can but modifying it to fit as I go. I have made a good start on Bullens road as it was that night although the roof needs some work and I need to add flood lights across the roof and the flags at the rear. (ALso the TV gantry needs straightening after I superglued my finger to one side and pulled half of it down.

Looking on hear I have already took some inspiration for the more difficult Main stand and Park end although the roof on both is going to be a challenge.

Any advice you have from you experience will be greatfully recieved as I have only been a stadium builder for a few weeks and at the moment I am more like a cowboy builder and have to keep going back and fixing early errors

Mate, that is absolutely stunning, bravo sir!! I have a pitch that is from your Subbuteo box mines is a cotton felt one, rather than a zeugo one, any help on straightening out them creases. Keep the amazing work up and great photography, some sponsors on the stands would be ace!!

Thanks Mate, to be honest I have started with the easy stuff, subbuteo had done most of the work for me. The other stands will take a lot more creativity. Then it will be spectators. I was thinking I could stick a few surprises in with spectators see if anybody notices...

As for the pitch I had a similar issue. The pitch that came in the box was really thin almost see through and really difficult to manage. I also had the issue of using multiple mdf boards as a base. However I had mounted the original pitch the ball and players would not have crossed the points where I had joined the boards very well. I decided I needed something thicker and tried the original subbuteo Astro pitch which turned out to be a lot bigger than the pitch that comes with the new box. This would have made the whole thing much to big to have permanently on display so I measured the playing surface of the smaller pitch in the new box and did a quick internet search which came up with the 3 quarter sized Zeugo Astro. I bought this and it was both perfect size and thickness for me giving the added advantage of being able to pin down the netting in the goals.

To mount it I measured it and got it central on the board then drew around it with a marker. I took the pitch off and rolled it up tight. I then used some cheap double sided carpet tape from wicked to cover the area I had drew round with the marker. Then lining up the corners slowly rolled out the pitch from one side to the other and its now semi permanently mounted and will stay exactly where it is without rolling back up in the corners.

Maybe you could try some carpet tape with your pitch onto some rubber matting or similar effectively making your own Astro turf type pitch.

Hope this helps

Absolutely stunning mate. Brilliant work.
I'm in the process of rebuilding my stadium, and hope to have some worthwhile pictures up soon.
Can you let me know how you did the lettering on the 'seats' - did you just cut tape or card masks and then spray...??

Hi mate, Thanks

The lettering I am really happy with. I bought them on Amazon. These were a bit of a gamble and I went with 4 inch but if you start on the bottom step of the grandstand and use a screw driver to roll and push it into the steps they are the perfect size. These looks really authentic and not like a sticker so for £7 an absolute must. I extended the stand so had to take the old ones off and then put new ones on. you get 4 of each letter if that helps calculate what you need.

That is a stunning effort...looking forward to seeing this develop. I enjoyed building mine...but gave up when it came to doing the spectators. That was soul destroying lol

When sticking down pitches, I've always used watered down pva glue.

That looks brilliant mate, you've nailed the Bullens Road stand- that's some effort.

Are you going to add in the Littlewoods clock in the corner of the Gwladys Street end? That would be attention to detail!

Egreen667. Cheers mate for your kind words the seating effect is totally authentic feel to it. Love Goodison as a ground. I'm a shot but Newcastle always been my English side first football top i got sponsored by Brown Ale. Evertons is a traditional stadium. Steeped in history and it's right knit and close to the pitch . Proper old school atmosphere. Keep the photos coming the pitch I've got is from the 2012 edition. It's a lovely velvety baize. Much superior than my original one which was a nylony one.

I've read many suggestions about the pva glue I want to keep my original stuff and not lose any of the investment in the authentic subby stuff.
