thank you NGD

Another Top Spin. Following on from the Elche here is Platense of Argentina. One of the few teams in the world to have Brown (not maroon) as a key colour in their kit

sadly I am coming to the end of my current supply of blank Top Spins and Santiagos but do have some stripped down Subby figures & bases to do something with.

What type of paints and brushes do you use? Looking to paint my own Zeugo teams soon mainly the African national teams as they aren't available anywhere. Cheers.

Ah Garbarnia...Krakow's 4th team behind Wisla, Cracovia & Hutnik. I have heard of them. Nice paint job btw.

Yeh I am a bit of a statto like you Mark but even I havnt come across that Italian side before.

I have done Subbuteo reference charts for various foreign countries. And when you get to down the leagues you come across a lot of obscure teams. Especially a big nation like Germany. You have Bundesligas 1 2 and 3 and then the 4th level is the Regionalliga which has 5 leagues then the 5th level , the Oberligas, has 14 leagues.

So the top 5 levels has 22 leagues. Thats a lot of teams (approx 400). Thats before you even get down to the Landesligas and below.

I try to get close to the original HW subbuteo (using Top Spins & Santiagos) so I use Humbrol (matt) enamel paints (occasionally Revell enamels). I know Mark (Focus on) uses enamels as well as do many other painters (Lloydie, Spudksi , Mark Parker etc) to keep faithful to the originals. You could use acrylics which are water based so a bit easier to use. Humbrol & Revell also do these and other leading brands are , Vellejo, Tamiya & Citadel (warhammer)

From my experience Zuegos tend to be a bit 'glossier' but ultimately its personal choice.

As for brushes over the years I have sometimes gone for cheap brushes and i have also spent small fortunes on occasions. Currently I use some quite inexpensive brushes from 'The Range" store. Mainly 0 or 00 size but sometimes 3/0 or even 5/0 10/0 for fine detail. I know Calum (Westwood) used 00 and achieved some incredibly fine detail ie pinstripes or buttons on collars or tie strings on shorts.......to this day i dont know how. Beyond my skill level.

Remember you may wish to thin down the paints (for acrylics you can simply add tiny amounts of water -and you can clean your brushes with water as well) (For enamels you need Enamel Thinners)

I come at football from an ex hooligan level as you know, so grimy, dive grounds in lower leagues are my thing esp here in the East of Europe,
and f me we got some beauts!...Poland up the road and Hungary beneath us!...Ukraine to the right and Austria to the left!
For my money they can keep sky sports kick off times and modern Lego grounds... i really do prefer sh~tholes in the middle of nowhere.
You get to see football for what it really is away from all the Rondildos and 'multi sponsor' strips of this world.

Re that Italian team and the lower league German Tier system, its very very interesting mate....some brilliant kits and history

I do find researching foreign footy interesting Mark.

What fascinates me about German football in particular is its irreverence for the size of clubs. Even today you get really big clubs regularly getting relegated like VfB Stuttgart last season and the likes of Eintracht Frankfurt & 1FC Koln have been in 2 Bundesliga.

And you get some really old traditional teams in the lower leagues.

Its interesting that in the German Region Leagues the amount of East German teams that were big in the day, plus quite a few from the west who lost their pro licences and have had to start at the bottom. Some very nice 'Traditional' kits as well

On that theme Paul.

Here's my attempt at SG Dynamo Dresden circa 1976 (top spin) Even put a badge on

One of the biggest teams in East Germany their glory years were the 1970's when they regularly competed in the European Cup

After the unification of Germany in 1990 Dresden got promoted to the Bundesliga at the 1st attempt. But it was a struggle and their stay only lasted 4 seasons. They then had their pro licence revoked and went into the 3rd tier. By the turn of the millenium they were down in the 4th tier having to play local minnows FV Dresden-Nord. Former East German greats 1FC Magdeburg, Dynamo Berlin & Lokomotiv Leipzig were also at t his level.

The last decade has seen them yo-yo between the 2nd and 3rd divisions. They won promotion back to 2 Bundesliga in May. Nice to see their current kit is a tribute to this '70's classic.

I always liked Dynamo Berlin, saw on them tv as a kid and adopted them as my East German team, now known again as BFC Dynamo, down in the Reigonaliga, and not many going through the gate.

There are a hell of a lot of semi pro clubs in the Berlin area, some very Eastern Bloc style grounds to be seen still

Dynamo were/are reviled in the rest of the country. When they dominated the East German league in the 80's it was widely believed they referees made decisions in their favour under the influence of the politburo and their links to the stasi (secret police) meant they often bought the best players from the other clubs.

Once the old regime went so did Dynamo's success. Like other govt supported clubs from the old eastern bloc (eg Dukla Prague) they struggled to adjust to the new order of things and lost a lot of the fans they had. Though even during their heydey 1FC Union Berlin (East Berlins' other top division side in the old DDR days) were the more 'popular' club even with little success on the pitch.

I always had a bit of a soft spot for Magdeburg myself. Ever since i saw them in a Panini Euro sticker album from around 1976. ( I bet youve got that complete album Mark )

That reminds me as i kid i collected those european club postcards. Cant remember the name (wasnt Panini). They were awesome with some really nice team pics on a glossy postcard. The Dresden (like the kit above) was a beaut.

quick edit - it was flip postcards:

Yes Dynamo were given the title by the Stasi time after time, bit like Kiev in Russia.
