A few teams and a question...

Postby spudski » 29 Sep 2016, 18:53

Have painted a few teams recently, concentrating on keeping the colours as near as dammit to SSG originals, and painting sympathetically to the Kent Housewife style. It's my favoured look on a team.

Which leads me to a question to all painters and collectors of Subbuteo.

When painting figures, I generally place them in the bases and discs that are going to be used, and hold the base whilst painting each figure.

Occasionally the figure is too loose in the disc, especially if it's a Santiago, and it will flop about. So you end up holding the figure.

Now when holding the figure and painting, it's a real pain in the arse and slow.

So....how did the Kent housewives hold the HW figures when painting? They painted hundred a day. I can't see them doing it, by holding them as it's too slow...plus I can't see them placing each figure in base and discs...or did they? I heard that some placed string between the legs and bar of the player and had them hanging and painted them that way...whether true or not, I don't know.

But anyone who paints will know to paint 100's a day takes some doing. So which way was the quickest?

Anyway...here's a few teams done of late...

Excellent painting Spud, great Spurs kit. I love the Kent style as well.

I thought I read somewhere that the players were painted on a sprue. Expect Mark A may have some idea. I know what you mean about some of the Santiago being loose in the base, had the same problem when doing the World Cup project, I just put a bit of sellotape over the bar.

Now that would make sense if they were still on a sprue fella. So much easier and faster to paint. Now why didn't I think of that haha. :-\

I haven't painted for quite some time, so my memory might be failing me but I don't remember the figures wobbling in the bases.

Mind you, I never used Santiago bases. Only ever used old HW bases bought on eBay. Does the bar on a classic HW fit more snugly into the base slot that on a Santiago base? Don't know.

When I've painted a completely stripped HW I think I painted the player loose in the base whilst holding the base then, when dry, removed that player and painted hair & boots. Then I think I bodged them into a piece of Blutac which I'd rolled into a little sausage shape. :)

Once they were dry I'd glue them into the bases.

This is all making me want to start painting again.

Need to do some Italian away sides from the Seventies.

The obvious exception to the above is when the socks are black, in which case, the boots are brown and you have to paint the socks last. 8)

Some of the Santiago bars are quite thin, and the disc bar opening quite wide. So some of them tend to fall out unless glued in.

Original HW's and Topspin seem to be the opposite...a very snug fit.

Funnily the majority of those kits above are 70's Italian away kits. :-)

The one that looks like Man Utd 2nd is Sant Angelo. Amazing how many Admiral kits keep turning up on different teams :-)

Why do you have to paint the boots last if the boots are black? Regardless of colour I always paint the boots and hair last.

SSG/Waddingtons actually advised painters to pin a length of string between 2 walls/objects, after threading it through the figures legs and paint them upside down, this was told after Peter Adolph left the company as he was against such a system. I was told this by a lady who was a Outworker in the mid 1970's, her son was someone I knew on the playing circuit.

For ill fitting Santiagos just put a bit of square paper under the bar and insert into base
Same method was adopted by flats players to loose fits
