Nice story Ian :-) Agree with the nipple rub. I think Mick Channon mentioned it on the Admiral documentary. Plus overheating...I love the Man Utd 2nd template...looks lovely on a tracksuit as well.

Here's the WBA in blue shorts Mark...

The one I posted up with Blue and yellow 'Arsenal' kit...I've got a pic of it on my other computer somewhere...when I'm on it next I'll dig it out.

This motely crew then Mark...looks a nice one.

I like yellow and blue as a colour combination. I'm surprised more teams haven't had yellow and blue vertical stripes as a kit tbh.

Also painted up another Admiral kit from 1979...Norwich 2nd... a not often seen kit.

Enjoyed doing this commission for a fellow City fan. My fav City kit...Umbro being my next favourite brand to Admiral. They kind of took over when Admiral went tits up for a while in the late 70's.

Had a bit of a Eureka moment last night, on the colour matching front.

Have always found this SSG colour hard to get right...so attacked it from a different direction...starting with brown and adding colour until near as dammit.

Was pretty chuffed with the end result...the broken Subbuteo figure is one I painted, and put next to a ref 55 to show comparison.

Used a pic of a ref 123 from the forum board as well to compare.

Still find red and green the hardest to perfectly colour match. What's the hardest colours you find to colour match? Any thoughts?

Great colour Match Ian, I go another way, starting off witha bit of humbrol 73, 89, and blue, with a touch of black, yours is spot on

I find colour matching difficult for most colours Ian!!

Thats a terrific 55 dark mauve there. Hard to tell it from the original. Great work.

I found maroon and claret tough (see my own custom paint thread). I suppose theyre a variation on a theme to the dark mauve. My best attempt was ok but not exact to the original.

I can get an acceptable green, sky blue and royal blue. Yeh Red takes some effort. I use a mix of reds 153 and 60 with a touch of 25.

Shows how much the humbrol colours have changed since the 70's as i cant imagine them spending the time to mix up their own paints as they went along. Where the basic colours simply out of the tin??

These days i cant think of any humbrol colour that doesnt need mixing (even flesh), Usually need at least 2 or more colours mixed to get close.

Of course you still get colour variations within the original subbuteo range. I have several Wolves 77 and Dundee U 49 teams with different shades of orange/tangerine. Some quite different in appearance. Tangerine is another tricky colour.

I can only think of a handful of guys out there who can consistently hit the colours well. You are right up there with the very best mate as is Mark (Cockney)

Cheers Paul...I'll give your 'recipe' a go as well to see the results.

It's not easy is it Ian...Tbh, trying to colour match and get that authentic 'feel' to a team is really hard, but it is rewarding when you pull it off...it's the best bit.

I think the secret, is to look at the original teams paint, and pick the colour out that hasn't been touched by grubby hands. The patina build up on the raised areas really goes a lot darker than the original colour. Look under the arms for the correct tone.

From memory, there was a fire at the Humbrol factory, and a lot of the original colour mix's were lost. The old boys who made the colours up, had to do it from memory and never got it spot on again. Plus pigments and matting agent have changed too.

Some of the gloss and satin colours are actually nearer the original colours that SSG used...especially the Gloss red, as it's actually red and not reddish brown like the matt colours.

As you say though, the colours differ over the HW period.

Black is another colour hard to get right. It's a very deep, almost coal like colour that SSG used. As black could be. Modern one's are too wishy washy.
