Cheers Paul...I'll give your 'recipe' a go as well to see the results.
It's not easy is it Ian...Tbh, trying to colour match and get that authentic 'feel' to a team is really hard, but it is rewarding when you pull it off...it's the best bit.
I think the secret, is to look at the original teams paint, and pick the colour out that hasn't been touched by grubby hands. The patina build up on the raised areas really goes a lot darker than the original colour. Look under the arms for the correct tone.
From memory, there was a fire at the Humbrol factory, and a lot of the original colour mix's were lost. The old boys who made the colours up, had to do it from memory and never got it spot on again. Plus pigments and matting agent have changed too.
Some of the gloss and satin colours are actually nearer the original colours that SSG used...especially the Gloss red, as it's actually red and not reddish brown like the matt colours.
As you say though, the colours differ over the HW period.
Black is another colour hard to get right. It's a very deep, almost coal like colour that SSG used. As black could be. Modern one's are too wishy washy.
