How much difference does the playing surface make?

Postby lewisdl » 15 Oct 2016, 09:50

I've never been a good player, more interested in collecting, but wonder how much difference the paying surface makes to paying.
I imagine really good payers practice a lot and get used to the feel of their own pitch but then when it comes to a competition they may play on a completely different type of pitch I.e think astropitch and baize. Do hey make a lot of difference or can players adapt easily.
I'm sort of drawing parallels with different surfaces in tennis. Clearly some players are far better on Clay than on Grass. However the very best players see robe able to adapt their game no matter what surface.

Yes they make a difference as does the ball ... a good player will know the differences and adapt to suit.

Loads of difference. The worse the pitch, the further the better player is brought down to the lesser player's level.

Yeah I can imagine a badly creased pitch would make a big difference but I was thinking more about in competitions. I imagine different competitions would use different surfaces but otherwise be perfect. Do players gave favourite surfaces?

When we used to have tournaments as kids there was deffo a bit of home advantage.
I had the later pitch from my LW Club Edition,my mate had the baize pitch from an earlier HW Club edition.
I always found it harder on his pitch and vice versa.
Then there was the amount of space around the pitch as we always played on the floor,my bedroom was quite tight, not much room to manoeuvre lol
