Restoration and fixing up projects

Postby Wrightenberg » 01 Feb 2016, 17:21

I've recently been buying up repainted / poor condition teams with the aim of restoring them to their former glory, or (where beyond restoration, or if I already have that team) repainted as rare teams to fill up those blanks in my own personal collection.

First up is a Middlesbrough HW Ref 171 that had been ruined by an attempt to add numbers on the back in gloss paint.

I scraped off as much gloss as possible, then touched up with a mix of red and then added the white.

Nice, keep them coming ;-)
It all seems very easy, this revolution game

Your intellectual theories on how it's going to be
Don't seem to take into account the true reality

Cheers guys.

Next up is an overpainted Ref 10. I decided that I didn't want to waste time and effort on a common ref (when I've already got two of them in good condition). Instead, I decided to strip and paint up as a Ref 69 - replacing the keeper and box.

Cheers Mark, Just an easier way of getting some of those rarer refs I’m never going to find without be paying £££’s for. Just painting for my own collection these days and at my own pace. Really enjoying the smell of Humbrol again 8)

Currently removing numbers from the back of a HW 159. Slow process - but very rewarding.

Yeah, nice colour combo the old Liverpool 2nd kit. I'd have kept it only the paint was a bit too slapped on in places - Kent housewife on valium style ;-)

Next up is the Ref 159 (almost done) and then two very badly overpainted teams that'll probably have to be stripped. One's possibly a Ref 38 (though probably a Ref 9) and the other one Ref 173. The 173 has the ref number on the box and 'Portsmouth' in biro on the lid, but it's been painted up as an England 2nd kit (red shirts and white shorts). I've love to be able to salvage something original from it - but I'm not holding out much hope.

I picked up a ref 38 recently by accident. always wanted one
I got what I thought was a ref 8 with socks painted red cheap off eBay.
when it came the socks are genuine....it was a ref 38 but the shorts were over painted in black gloss. shame.

so a dilemma . the socks and shirts are good so I don't want to completely strip it down.

shall try to scalpel off the black shorts but will likely remove the original red underneath as well and then re-touch up the shorts in red.

look forward to seeing your latest teams and thanks for sharing Steve.

Cheers Dunc. Well pleased with the teams you sent btw. You'll be seeing some of them in this thread over the next couple of weeks.

I won this on Ebay for about £6.00. Players and box are fine... just the numbers on the back that was the problem.

I carefully scalpelled most of it off, then gently rubbed the remaining bits off with nail polish remover and a cotton wool bud.

Took a bit of time but well worth it.

That Peru has come up a treat Steve.

Looks a steal at £6.
