You are right, "edit" button disappeared. It is a useful button.

It disappears after certain amount of time has elapsed (cant remember exactly how long, maybe 30 mins). The idea is that you have time to edit messages if you realise youve mistyped or want to add something.

But it prevents you from, say, defaming someone and then later on editing it out and claiming you never did it....

apparently ANYTHING you say on the internet is not sue-able (shame) so whats the point (?)

seeing as how anyone can hack your email or accounts, anyone could be typing this right now calling people, well,...'all sorts'

anyone with a swinging pair should stand by what they say anyway first time round.

Your first sentence is not correct. If you libel someone on, say, Facebook or Twitter, you can be sued for defamation.

Varies by country, but here's how it stands in England and Wales...

English law allows actions for libel to be brought in the High Court for any published statements alleged to defame a named or identifiable individual or individuals in a manner that causes them loss in their trade or profession, or causes a reasonable person to think worse of them. Allowable defenses are justification (the truth of the statement), fair comment (whether the statement was a view that a reasonable person could have held), and privilege (whether the statements were made in Parliament or in court, or whether they were fair reports of allegations in the public interest). An offer of amends is a barrier to litigation.

The point is that 'published' includes stuff written on the internet. A good recent example was when George Monbiot and Sally Bercow repeated on Twitter paedophile allegations against Lord MacAlpine which turned out to be wrong.

so, you can say what you like about anyone then as long as its true.
Then you have to prove the truth i guess
grey area all round, as one persons idea of facts isn't necessarily anothers.
Like if i say Jimmy Saville was a nonce, and he was imho, that's ok, unless he dis-agrees :|
