Meet 13 – 13/07/19

Location: The Cabin

Having recovered from our trip to Stoke (oh, the back ache!), we’ve jumped straight into Meet 13. This session we welcomed Justin & Richard from Wolverhampton TFC for a change of pace to their usual FISTF style of play. With baize pitches, the small 18mm ball and old HW / Flats figures to contend with, it was certainly a different experience for them both!

With 9 players in attendance, Steve kindly brought along his ‘Park Pitch’ for us to all play on in addition to Cabin Stadium and the Black Pitch. With either trees or woollen jumpers for goalposts, it was a delight to play on with games full of fun and laughter.

As always, the day tends to revolve around food more than it does Subbuteo, with a BBQ being the main focus. Plenty of food was consumed, beverages drank, and good banter flowed throughout the day. Sometimes we forget to play Subbuteo, we’re so busy chatting about it!

It was a nail biting finish to the end of session 13, with Andy leading the way on 19 points, the final game of the day saw Justin play Ian. Justin needed to win by a 3 goal margin to level on points with Andy and clinch top spot on GD. A furious battle against Ian commenced, Justin took a 2 goal lead into the break. After a quick switch around, Ian held on until a minute to go, when Justin thumped the ball into the back of the net, providing him the 3 goal win he required to clinch top spot. Well played Justin!

Despite a poor start, Andy’s Brazil Ladies team pulled it together and managed to storm up the table. It’s always tough losing out on GD, but we’re sure he’ll bounce back to his (usual?) top of the table spot in our next session. Hard lines mate!

Richard Badger’s second visit to The Cabin saw him finish in a respectable third place. Always a tough opponent to play against, Richard’s skill shone through with the old HW and Flat bases as he banged in the goals and grabbed the points from his opponents. We hope to see him return again in the future!

Still on a high from reaching the final at Stoke, Adam’s results today were mixed. Varying up his games playing with either HW’s or Flats, he spent more time with a beer bottle in his hand than he did his goal keeper! Sometimes it’s just not your day, but we’re sure he’ll return to form for the next meet.

Mirroring Adam’s league position, it could have been a very different finish for Ian if he hadn’t had to face Justin in the final game of the day. Whilst Ian’s playing form wasn’t at the level we know it can reach to today, his banter factor was turned up to 11 for the day! The West Country Wizard was a delight as always, especially with a few ciders inside him. Let’s hope the next meet brings the same banter factor!

Stephen’s Park Pitch was a perfect addition to this meet; games being played outside really should be played in a park……that’s what we got from Stephen today! The imagination that went into producing this pitch is delightful, the execution of the idea was just perfect. All of the Old Sods members can’t wait until we play at Stephen’s to try his other imaginative pitches.

Most improved player of the day goes to Dave. In his second meet (excluding his visit to Stoke), Dave’s banged in the goals, got himself a couple of draws and a win. Well done Dave! He’s one to watch over the coming months, as we’re sure his game will continue to take leaps and bounds.

Rocket’s early win was enough for him to see off John’s challenge for the Wooden Spoon. He managed to surprise a few of us with a sudden increase of speed that appears to have come from nowhere. He must have taken on extra Rocket Fuel this meet! Rocket’s gameplay has also improved over the past few sessions…..it’s all starting to fall into the right place. Expect to see improving results very soon!

Last, but not least, John holds us all up at the foot of the table. He managed to bring his shooting boots this time, scoring a couple of beauties against Ian to earn a well deserved draw. A little bit of practice can go a long way, especially when you receive some helpful tips from Justin! John’s shooting boots have now been superglued onto his fingers, we hope he’ll get good use of them between now and the next meet!

To wrap up, we would like to say a huge thankyou to both Justin and Richard for attending today. We all thoroughly enjoyed playing against them and hope to see them both return in the future. We next meet up at the Southend-on-Sea Old Subbuteo tournament in September, where we’ll all get a game in the Stadium of Fingers. Can’t wait!! Until then, Pork Pie Fat Tongue!
