Old Sods Meet 5 – 14 July 2017

Location: The Cabin

It’s been a long time between sessions 4 and 5 as the Old Sods played in the Stoke OS tournament in June. All 5 regular Olds Sods players attended the Stoke tournament and represented the club well. Ian and Adam both qualified from their groups to enter the knockout stages of the main competition. Unfortunately both lost their knockout games, playing well but ultimately not progressing further. Andy, Richard and John all competed in the Plate competition, with Andy and John contesting the Final! Andy brought home the Plate trophy, the first for the club. Pork Pie Fat Tongue!

Session 5 saw a very welcome guest appearance from Mick Hammonds from Wolverhampton TFC. Playing with the old HW bases and small 18mm ball was a whole new challenge for Mick, who is used to playing the FISTF game. Read on to see how he fared against the Old Sods.

Summer time is all about 1 thing, barbeques. We certainly didn’t disappoint, with a massive meat fest on offer for the players during the wonderful warm weather we’re having in the UK….it’s a rarity even for summertime!

Games were played in the Cabin (aka the sweat box) and outside (yes, we’re back outside!). Adam recently picked up some Hasbro Throw In figures and Corner kickers from the France 98 box set, which are surprisingly great fun to play with. For this session, we made a home ruling that all thrown ins and corners had to be taken using this equipment. It made some fantastic, hilarious and bizarre results!

Here’s the results from session 5:

Location Player Score Score Player

Cabin Ian 2 1 Adam

Outside Andy 0 0 John

Cabin Rich 0 1 Mick

Outside Ian 2 1 Andy

Cabin John 1 0 Rich

Outside Mick 0 0 Adam

Cabin Ian 2 0 John

Outside Adam 3 1 Rich

Cabin Andy 1 1 Mick

Outside Ian 3 0 Rich

Cabin Adam 0 0 Andy

Outside John 0 4 Mick

Cabin Ian 1 1 Mick

Outside Adam 1 1 John

Cabin Andy 4 0 Rich

Final Table:

Player Played Won Drawn Lost G+ G- GD Points

Ian 5 4 1 0 10 3 7 13

Mick 5 2 3 0 7 2 5 9

Andy 5 1 3 1 6 3 3 6

Adam 5 1 3 1 5 4 1 6

John 5 1 2 2 2 7 -5 5

Richard 5 0 0 5 1 12 -11 0

Ian retains the trophy from session 4, topping the table again with an impressive 4 wins and a draw. I don’t know whether it was the sunshine, the sardines or the cider, but something certainly clicked this session!

A great performance from our guest player Mick saw him finish in second place, winning 2 and drawing 3 of his games. We all hope he enjoyed the days play and he’s welcome back any time.

Andy sneaks into 3rd on goal difference. Another impressive performance from Mr P saw him lose just 1 game all day. He’s looking to build on that Plate final win, don’t be surprised to see him top the league in the next couple of sessions.

Adam’s results today were mixed, finishing 4th with a meagre performance compared to his usual standards. Maybe one too many burgers and ciders affected his performance today? An improvement is required next time.

John performed exceptionally well with his Pendle Falcon flats today, recording a win and 2 draws. Reaching the final at Stoke goes to show how well his game is coming along. Expect more good things from John in the next couple of sessions.

Richard is used to holding up everyone at the foot of the table, but despite some heavy loses today, his game play is coming along very nicely. He scored a fantastic goal against Adam from open play. We’re all positive that his goal keeping (or lack of!) will improve over the next few sessions. With a newly built pitch, he’s got no excuse now to not practice and will be hosting some sessions in the near future.

We didn’t get chance to play any flats / doubles games this time, mainly due to the warm weather. We’ll look to bring these back next session as we all enjoy them.

Until the next time…..keep on flicking!

Old Sods Meet 6 – 18 August 2018

Location: The Cabin

It’s been a month since our last meeting, which has felt like an entire summer! Session 6 saw the regular 5 Old Sods members meet up for another fun, eventful 7 hour Subbuteo marathon. With plenty of banter, a huge feast and numerous goals being scored, it’s been a great session for all.

Games were once again played inside the Cabin and outside on the patio, with players having to play against a slight breeze on the outside pitch. Thankfully the Cabin wasn’t as warm as the last session, making for a slightly more comfortable playing environment.

Ian, the current reigning champion, has held bragging rights for the past couple of months based on his fine performances. Has he retained his top dog status, or have bragging rights changed hands? Read on to find out!

Session 6 results:

Location Player Score Score Player

Ian 1 1 Andy

Adam 1 0 John

Ian 0 1 Adam

John 1 0 Richard

Ian 3 1 John

Andy 2 0 Richard

Ian 2 1 Richard

Andy 1 1 Adam

Andy 1 1 John

Adam 5 0 Richard

Andy 1 0 Adam

John 0 2 Ian

Ian 2 1 Andy

Richard 0 1 John

Ian 0 1 Adam

Richard 1 4 Andy

John 0 2 Adam

Richard 0 1 Ian *automatic win as Richard left early

Richard 0 1 Adam *automatic win as Richard left early

John 0 1 Andy

Final Table:

Player Played Won Drawn Lost G+ G- GD Points

Adam 8 6 1 1 12 2 10 19

Ian 8 5 1 2 11 6 5 16

Andy 8 4 3 1 12 6 6 15

John 8 2 1 5 4 10 -6 7

Richard 8 0 0 8 2 17 -15 0

After an appalling performance in session 5, Adam pulled up his socks and finished top, winning 6, drawing 1 and losing 1. With bragging rights changing hands, can Adam keep Top Dog status or will he crumble under the pressure next time?

Despite a valiant performance, Ian slipped to second spot this session. After a slow start and a heavy lunch (Pork Pie Fat Tongue!) affected Ian’s play, the sugar rush from Afternoon Tea perked up his performances allowing him to power to an impressive finish. All hail the Chaasekek!

Andy, aka Mr Consistent, finished 3rd yet again. What does he need to do to break into the top 2?!? Some fine performances with his Anderlecht La Leggenda team saw Andy finish as joint top goalscorer for the day on G+ 12. He just needs to convert some of the draws into wins and he’ll soon be Top Dog.

John’s results definitely don’t do justice to his gameplay. His defensive play today was frustrating for all of his opponents. It’s at the other end of the pitch that he struggles, with opportunities often few and far between. His Pendle Falcon figures are difficult to play against and cause problems for his opponents. We’re hoping he can refine his shooting in future sessions to compliment his great build up play.

Flats. What a difference they’ve made to Richard’s game! This Black Country gent has finally found a team that suits his style of play; we’ve seen a huge improvement since a month ago. Richard just needs to find a suitable goalkeeper (perhaps a Black Pudding on a rod?) to sure up his defence and he’ll start to cause some upsets.

Again, no flats doubles this session as we managed to play home and away fixtures. We’ll look to bring them back soon as they are great fun.

Until the next time, keep on flicking!

Managed to take quite a few pics this time. Also got a few slowmo videos which are interesting to watch, including a great slow motion throw in and a not so great slow motion shot by Speedwaymad!
