Old Sods Meet 8 – 24 November 2018

Location: Knowle West Road Ground

We’ve reached our 1 year anniversary. It’s been a fantastic 12 months, we’ve built great relationships, had a few guest players join us and have eaten plenty of pork pies! Oh, we’ve also played a fair bit of Subbuteo!

Session 8 saw a change of venue. Adam’s currently creating a stadium in the Cabin, so we’ve shifted to Richard’s house for this session at the Knowle West Road Ground. Leaving the beloved baize, we’ve switched over to Astro which caused players to alter their style of play.

Unfortunately Ian wasn’t able to attend this session due to a self inflicted injury, he was sorely missed and we all wish him a speedy recovery. Get well soon Spud!

As always, our matches revolve around a feast. We weren’t disappointed with our host providing us with a traditional Black Country dish – Groaty Dick Pudding. It was perfect for a dreary mid November day. If you’ve not tried it, it’s highly recommended. We also managed to scoff the obligatory Pork Pie and Black Pudding during the session, as well as a wonderful home made cheesecake to celebrate our first anniversary. I swear we’re all a stone heavier than we were 12 months ago!

Results:

Player Score Score Player

Andy 1 0 John

Rich 0 1 Swanny

John 0 0 Rich

Swanny 0 2 Adam

Adam 2 0 Rich

Andy 1 0 Swanny

Adam 0 1 Andy

John 0 1 Swanny

Adam 1 0 John

Andy 2 0 Rich

Table:

Player Played Won Drawn Lost G+ G- GD Points

Andy 4 4 0 0 5 0 5 12

Adam 4 3 0 1 5 1 4 9

Swanny 4 2 0 2 2 3 -1 6

John 4 0 1 3 0 3 -3 1

Richard 4 0 1 3 0 5 -5 1

We have a new Champion! Andy tops the league table for the first time with a perfect 4 wins from 4 games, not conceding a goal all day. We’ve all said it’s been coming for a while, the switch to Astro suited Andy’s game perfectly and has seen him reap the rewards. A well deserved victory for the Pykester!

Adam finished runner up this session, having topped the table last time. He initially struggled with the speed of the Astro, but soon got warmed up and starting banging in the goals. Perhaps he’s got used to having the home advantage?

Swanny finishes mid table, earning 2 victories and conceding 2 defeats. He has a very similar playing style to Andy, both enjoying success on the Astro. It’s great to see him join us again and hopefully he’ll be able to make the next session.

Having missed session 7, John was raring to go this time round. He’s becoming increasingly more difficult to beat, with a solid defensive display in all games. He just forgot to bring his shooting boots this session! We’ve been advised that he’s heading back to the training ground for a bit of practice prior to our next meet…..I think we should all be worried!

Despite finishing in fifth place, Richard’s performances this session were vastly improved compared to session 7. He’s avoided the heavy drummings of previous meets, working on his defensive play and even managing to get a few shots in against all opponents. The game between Richard and John finished 0-0, but could easily have been 5-5 had it not been for some wayward shooting and fantastic goalkeeping from both players.

It’s been a wonderful 12 months, hopefully the next 12 months will be equally as fun! We’ll return in 2019 for our next meet. Until then…..Pork Pie Fat Tongue!

Thank you. It certainly was an enjoyable day. We play to have fun, in the right spirit rather than being overly competitive. There probably more focus on food than there is subbuteo now!!

And long may it continue Adam...it's the magic formula imo, and why the 'Club', and interest from others to join us has been so successful.

We are a right mixed bunch of personalities...and on paper it shouldn't work...but I've never known such a diverse group get on so well.

It's playing for fun rather than competition that makes it work.

Food and drink and our passion for it, is now a great addition...add that to humour, banter, football, music, sport, Collecting and sharing Subbuteo, playing almost feels like a sideline lol

What shows it works...is how eager everyone is for the next meet...and how far some travel.

Wouldn't miss it for the world...unless one does ones ankle in lol

Old Sods Meet 9 – 13 January 2019

Location: The Cabin

With Adam’s stadium complete, the 9th meeting of the Old Sods saw us venture back into the Cabin for another fun filled day of Subbuteo. A mild winter’s day saw plenty of action, with Andy looking to retain the title that he won in meet 8. Ian made his return, having missed the last session, but unfortunately Swanny was unable to attend. Hopefully he’ll be back with us for our next meet.

The new stadium is a leveller for all players, with the narrow space between stand and pitch causing a few problems, forcing players to flick with both hands….it was interesting to say the least! The extra width and height that now surrounds the pitch caused a few issues for everyone, with players now having to stretch to reach the middle of the pitch. We may look to raise the height of the playing surface next time in an attempt to alleviate the symptoms of ‘Subbuteo Back’ that we are suffering from!

Results:

Player Score Score Player

Andy 1 0 John

Rich 1 0 Ian

John 1 1 Rich

Ian 1 1 Adam

Adam 2 0 Rich

Andy 1 0 Ian

Adam 0 0 Andy

John 0 3 Ian

Adam 1 0 John

Andy 1 0 Rich

Final Table:

Player Played Won Drawn Lost G+ G- GD Points

Andy 4 3 1 0 3 0 3 10

Adam 4 2 2 0 4 1 3 8

Ian 4 1 1 2 4 3 1 4

Richard 4 1 1 2 2 4 -2 4

John 4 0 1 3 1 6 -5 1

A first class performance sees Andy retain the trophy that he won last session. He’s now gone 2 sessions without conceding a goal! The Dark Horse tag has now been shrugged off and Top Dog status has been established. The King of LW’s will be tricky to knock off top spot next session!

Second place goes to Adam, who really struggled on his own pitch this session, despite the results. A fortunate own goal against Ian saw lady luck favour Adam, with the goal coming against the run of play. He’s got his work cut out to remain top of the stats based on this sessions performances!

Ian’s return brought mixed results. Nursing an injury, it took time to adjust to the new pitch. By the end of the session, he was peppering his opponents goal with numerous shots, only to be denied time and again. Hopefully the time between session 9 and 10 will provide Ian with enough time to heal, where he’ll be back to his best.

The shock result of the day goes to Richard, who has finally pulled himself off of the bottom of the table! Practice games against Andy & Adam during the Christmas break and a trip to the Stadium of Fingers seem to have done Richard the world of good as he’s now getting on the score board. Could this be the start of Richard’s rise to the top?

Despite finishing at the foot of the table this time, John managed to get that elusive goal, something he struggled with in session 8. Now he’s found his shooting boots, it’s going to be a real fight between him and Richard to avoid the wooden spoon. Hopefully we’ll see him bang in a few more next time!

We’d like to thank everyone who follows us, hopefully some of you managed to catch the live streams of some of our games. Our next meet will hopefully take place in February, date tbc. Due to the limited space inside the Cabin, this will be a members only meet. When the weather gets better and we can venture outside again, guest players will be welcome.

Until the next time, Pork Pie Fat Tongue!

Old Sods Meet 10 – 23 February 2019

Location: The Cabin

Meet 10 saw the welcome return of Steve ‘Fingers’ Moreton to club action. Not only is Steve a master craftsman of Subbuteo stadiums, he’s a fantastic player who’s love for the game spreads infectiously to all he plays against.

Unfortunately both John and Swanny were unable to attend, both were greatly missed. We hope to see them both next time.

We managed to get 2 tables on the go for this meet thanks to the warm weather we are being blessed with. It meant all 5 players could play a home and away fixture on the black pitch and within Adam’s stadium.

Will LW maestro Andy cope with pressure of retaining the top spot for a third session? Will the HW master Ian finally get his flicking finger back on track? Will Adam stop moaning about his injured flicking finger? Will Rich’s travels reap rewards? Read on to find out!

Results:

Final Table:

Adam 8 4 1 3 0 0 0 13

Andy 8 3 1 4 0 0 0 10

Richard 8 0 2 6 0 0 0 2

Taking back his position at the top of the table, Ian had a fantastic day winning 6 of his 8 games played. Avoiding his usual after dinner slump, his new moulded team romped to victory to lift the Old Sods trophy. Well done Spud!

Stephen certainly wasn’t hampered by the 3 hours journey to play with us, finishing the day in runner up position. Alternating between flats and HW’s, he opened up the defences of the Old Sods with ease, scoring some fantastic goals and showed us all how the old corner kickers should be used. We all hope he’s able to make another session very soon.

Despite his injury to his flicking finger, Adam pulled off a respectable finish of mid table. Hopefully the flicking finger recovers in time for the next meet!

Oh how the mighty have fallen! The pressure of finishing top for the 3rd meet on the trot got to Andy as he missed chances he normally would have taken on a couple of occasions. Perhaps the switch back to the 22mm ball hampered his playing style slightly? We’re sure he’ll bounce back during the next meet……he’s proved he can mix it with the best.

A vastly improved performance from Richard saw him pick up a couple of draws and bang in a few goals. Despite finishing bottom of the table, he was by no means easily beaten during the day with his goalkeeper being player of the day. John may need to start worrying about the next meet!

Our next meeting will take place in March. Until then………Pork Pie Fat Tongue!

Meet 12 – 11/05/19 - The Flats Tournament

Location: The Cabin

As lovers of the traditional game, we all decided it would be fun to play a tournament using Flats. Using a mixture of original Subbuteo card & celluloid teams, Pendle Falcon replicas and a few home-made teams, 7 players (our joint largest turnout!) pitted their wits and flicking skills against each other to lift the coveted Old Sods trophy for the 12th time.

We welcomed back Steve ‘Fingers’ Moreton & Swanny for this meet. Steve made a fantastic effort to join us for the 3rd time, travelling from Southend to join us in the Midlands. Swanny has missed the last couple of sessions, we’re all pleased he managed to join us for our first Flats session. Unfortunately Dave couldn’t make it this time, we hope to see him back soon.

Results:

Andy 5 0 Richard

John 0 1 Stephen

Ian 1 0 Swanny

Richard 0 2 Adam

Table:

Adam 6 3 2 1 7 2 5 11

Ian 6 3 1 2 3 5 -2 10

Swanny 6 2 0 4 3 6 -3 6

Richard 6 1 1 4 1 10 -9 4

John 6 0 0 6 0 8 -8 0

We have a new winner! The long journey was all worth it for Fingers as he finished top of the table. It was a close finish, with Fingers and Andy level on points until the final round of the meet. Fingers superb goalkeeping skills kept out the barrage of attacks from Andy, with a deft goal clinching the win to see him lift the Old Sods trophy for the first time. Well done Fingers!

Andy’s skill with the Flats was a delight to watch. Finishing the meet as top scorer, the change from his beloved LW’s to Flats was seamless as he banged the goals in. Whilst he may have finished runner up this session, there’s no doubt that Andy will be the man to beat next time!

Finishing in a respectable third, Adam’s Pendle Falcons performed exceptionally well. They held their own against the original Subbuteo bases, flicking in straight lines and curling around defenders was a joy. Having lost just 1 game all day (to the eventual winner), Adam can be pleased with his performance.

It’s not often we see the West Country wizard finish mid-table. Ian’s results today were mixed. His ‘skipping’ goalkeeper flapped on a few occasions and was nearly banned. Players went missing (quite literally on the black pitch!) but still he battled on. I’m sure we’ll see a return to form in our next meet.

Swanny’s return to the game started off a little rusty having not flicked with us for the past couple of meets. As the day went on, his flicking skills returned to the levels we have become accustomed to as he sped around the table with superb accuracy. A respectable 5th place given his lack of playing time. We hope he can make it for the next meet.

Richard’s game continues to improve every meet. As a regular user of flats, Richard was at home with his Ref 7 on the pitch. A win against his close rival John saw Richard finish 6th. His rise up the table is slowly coming to fruition. Expect to see a few shock results from Richard in the near future.

Holding us up at the bottom this time is John. Another regular user of Pendle Falcons, last session saw John grab 3 goals and he only conceded 3 in 5 games. Fortune didn’t favour John this time as he left his shooting boots in the car! Whilst he may be disappointed with the day’s results, he can take solace from his defending as it was exceptional throughout the day (despite what the results tell you!). Hopefully he’ll remember to pack those shooting boots for the next meet.

We next meet up in June at the annual Stoke on Trent Old Subbuteo tournament. It’s a great event, this will be our 3rd consecutive year attending. If you’re interested in playing, please contact Andy Bowler for details. Until then…….Pork Pie Fat Tongue!
