A little behind schedule, but the summer tournament has begun. 64 games in total and the first two from Group A have been played, and the home fans won't want to hear the news...

HOSTS BEATEN BY HOLLAND AS 2018 WORLD CUP BEGINS

Russia 1-2 Holland
The hosts were beaten by the Orange in the opening game of the World Cup. Russia took a deserved lead with a goal of the tournament contender, a thunderous strike from distance cannoning in off the crossbar right in front of the home supporters (pictured). Holland struck back midway through the game, before a late strike sunk Russian hearts just seconds from time.

Senegal 0-3 South Korea
Group A's other game and result was never in doubt, with South Korea taking the lead inside 14 second with a quick break away after Senegal lost possession from kick off. South Korea were too good and quick up front for Senegal, and ran out easy 3-0 winners.

SPAIN, FRANCE SHOW LETHAL TOUCH, REP OF IRELAND BEATEN

GROUP B

Spain 5-0 Japan
Euro 2016 winners Spain wasted no time in showing their credentials for winning the World Cup by hammering a sorry Japan in Saint Petersburg. Spain's close control and slick style of play - the same that brought them success two years ago - was on show once again as Japan simply had no answer to the Spanish superiority.

Ghana 1-0 Serbia
Serbia's goalkeeper was undoubtedly the man of the match in this tight encounter, but the game was won by a superb free kick by the African side to earn what could turn out to be a crucial three points in the race for second.

GROUP C

France 4-1 Costa Rica
France also showed their firepower as they look to avenge the heartbreak of a final defeat on home soil at Euro 2016. They weren't without a scare here though, as Costa Rica took an early lead before France got themselves in front with two quickfire strikes. A third killed the game as a contest later in the game before an injury time finish in to the bottom corner sealed a win which looks harsh on Costa Rica.

Peru 2-1 Republic of Ireland
Ireland started this game really well and could have taken then lead if they'd scored with one of the two good chances they had. They were also wasteful from set pieces and were punished when Peru took their chances at the other end to take a 2-0 lead. Ireland got one back but could not find an equaliser, the Peru keeper making a good save from a tame effort late on which would have sealed a point.

Day two over, day three will see Brazil, Belgium and England all in action in their respective groups. Photos from day two can be seen below this report.

ENGLAND EDGE PAST IRAN; BRAZIL WIN, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO SHOCK SUISS

ENGLAND 2-1 IRAN
The feature game of the media reports on day three saw England edge past Iran to win their opening game in Group F. They took the lead before being pegged back, but a cool finish inside the last minute ensured England would open their campaign with three points.

The other game in their group ended 1-1 between Chile and Sweden, with the Swedes equalising deep in to stoppage time by bundling the ball in from a yard.

Brazil 2-0 Cameroon
Tournament favourites Brazil put in a solid yet unspectacular performance as they beat Cameroon 2-0. Another routine win for the team starting the match as favourites. The big talking point from Group D, and indeed from day three, was Trinidad & Tobago's win over Switzerland. An even affair was settled with a drilled strike which beat the keeper at the near post to send the tiny pocket of Trinidad fans in to raptures as their players celebrated at both ends of the pitch.

Belgium 2-1 Australia
Belgium's World Cup campaign started with an important victory over Australia as they look for a positive tournament in their new kit. Some slick attacking play was on show as they look to gain momentum from an open group before possibly heading in to the knockout rounds.

Ecuador 2-2 Ivory Coast
Easily the most entertaining game of the day and could have ended up any score. Twice Ecuador lead, twice they were pegged back. Both teams went at each other and knew how important three point could be in Group E, but both had to settle for an entertaining draw at the final whistle. Some interesting celebrations were also on show from the African side.

A good two-and-a-half years worth of work with the stadium, collecting the teams and playing the qualifiers. Started the South American qualifiers way back in 2015, November time I think it was.

Now nearly finishes the first round of group matches. No play today unfortunately, so Group G and Group H opening matches will be played tomorrow on a belated day four.

FAVOURITES GERMANY AND ARGENTINA ON THEIR WAY

Germany 1-0 Italy
Germany produced a dominating display despite only beating Italy by the single goal. A strike midway through the first half was enough to settle the game, with the Germans too good on the ball for Italy who didn't muster a shot on goal.

Argentina 1-0 USA
Another tournament favourite from Group H is Argentina, and they too were on the right side of a 1-0 scoreline. USA fought hard and certainly didn't do themselves any injustice, but quality up front was the difference in Saransk.

Algeria 1-1 Mexico
A tense game ended with drama as Mexico went ahead with a minute to play, only for the Algeria right back to score a stunning long range effort in to the far corner with the last kick of the game to earn a draw for the 2017 AFCON champions.

Poland 1-0 Greece
A rather low key game in which Greece struggled, Poland won 1-0 thanks to a scrambled goal on the line in the first half. A deserved win for the Poles in the battle of Europe.

Day five will see the second group games get under way, with hosts Russia playing Senegal in a must win game for both countries.

Yes and no. The room its in just about fits the table. I will probably move the table so one of the ends behind the goal is against the walls meaning I can walk around both sidelines of the pitch. I can reach to the other side but its tougher to shoot than I’d like. I suppose the tournament organisers couldn’t get everything right - that’d be a miracle!

GHANA SHOCK SPAIN TO PROGRESS; HOLLAND THROUGH, HOSTS RUSSIA STILL HAVE HOPE

Spain 0-1 Ghana
Ghana shocked tournament favourites Spain in Group B to book their place in the last 16 and leave their opponents sweating over their own tournament status. A controlled finish in to the bottom corner put the African side ahead, and what followed was a dogged defensive display which Spain's usual fluent passing game struggled to break down. Spain did hit the post whilst it was goalless, and they were made to pay when Ghana took the lead. Spain must avoid defeat against Serbia in their last game to ensure they go through to the first knockout round.

Japan 1-2 Serbia
Serbia gave themselves a chance with a deserved win against Japan, who are out. Two quick goals put Serbia ahead before Japan struck to give themselves a glimmer of hope. Serbia held out and must beat Spain next week to go through otherwise they will be eliminated on goal difference from Group B.

Russia 2-0 Senegal
Hosts Russia kept their hopes of progressing alive with a comfortable 2-0 win over Senegal in Rostov-on-Don to eliminate their opponents. A raucous atmosphere met the players and they delivered a dominant performance and got the important two goals to earn the victory. They must beat South Korea to go through in their last game.

Holland 1-0 South Korea
Finally on day five, Holland ensured they would be playing in the last 16 after a 1-0 win over South Korea. A more comfortable game than the scoreline suggests, the Orange are in to the last 16 and South Korea face a grudge match in Volgograd next week against tournament hosts Russia.

Keep across this page for Sunday's play which will feature France and Brazil, who are both looking to book their place in the last 16 with victories.

SWITZERLAND BEAT BRAZIL AS GROUP D BLOW WIDE OPEN; FRANCE THROUGH, REP OF IRELAND OUT

Brazil 1-2 Switzerland
A quite breath taking game in Nizhny Novgorod saw Switzerland come from behind to blow Group D wide open as they beat tournament favourites Brazil. The South American side went ahead and looked on course for the last 16, only for Switzerland to equalise and offer themselves some hope of staying in the tournament. There was drama at both ends as Brazil hit the post when their attacker should have scored, and the ball cannoned through for a Suiss attack. At the second attempt, after the ball had been cleared off the line, Switzerland's right winger bundled the ball home before Brazil had an effort at the other end cleared off the line! Brazil struggled to cope with Switzerland's right hand side, an area which other teams may be looking at should Brazil progress.

Cameroon 1-0 Trinidad & Tobago
Cameroon's win here means all four teams in Group D are level on 3 points. Goal difference keeps Cameroon bottom, who beat Trinidad despite their opponents hitting the post with the score at 1-0. The last games see Trinidad take on Brazil and Cameroon play Switzerland - both games are winner takes all.

France 3-0 Peru
If you are looking for a team who have hit form early in Russia, then look no further than France. A 4-1 demolition of Costa Rica earlier this week was backed up by another stunning attacking display as Peru were completely outclassed. France through to the knockout rounds with this victory.

Costa Rica 1-0 Republic of Ireland
No such luck for Ireland as their hopes were ended by defeat to Costa Rica. Even if the Irish manage to beat France in their last game, they cannot finish second as the two teams above them meet in the final group game. Ireland fought valiantly in Yekaterinburg but could not force an equaliser to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

ENGLAND BEATEN BY CHILE; BELGIUM STRUGGLE, POLAND THROUGH

Chile 2-1 England
England face an uphill struggle to reach the last 16 of the World Cup after they were beaten by Chile in Rostov-on-Don. Chile raced in front before England equalised and looked to have saved an underserved draw, but they went to sleep at the back and allowed Chile to take the lead straight from kick off.

Iran 0-2 Sweden
England's result leaves them third in Group F, and they must beat Sweden in their last game to go through after the Scandinavian side comfortably saw off Iran. Iran are now out of the tournament.

Belgium 0-1 Ecuador
Belgium were beaten by Ecuador following a piece of quick thinking from the South Americans. A free kick was played across the pitch, dead weight and accuracy, before the winger took one touch to set himself before unleashing a shot past the keeper. One of the goals of the tournament for technique from the pass to the finish.

Ivory Coast 1-2 Australia
Australia boosted their hopes of progressing to the last 16 with a deserved win against Ivory Coast. Two goals put the Aussies in control, a late goal gave Ivory Coast hope but they now face a tough battle to go through. Group E is definitely going to the wire.

Algeria 1-3 Poland
If Ecuador's goal was one for the tournament's best, then Algeria have definitely conceded the tournament's worst in Moscow (Spartak) against Poland. Trailing 1-0, their left winger tried playing the ball back to the left back but got far too much on the ball as it went past everyone and in via the help of the post. Poland could not believe their luck, and went on to win 3-1 in the end to qualify for the last 16. A quite bizarre goal that surely cannot be beaten?

Mexico 1-2 Greece
Greece moved in to the other qualifying spot in Group G with victory over Mexico. Mexico and Algeria still have a chance of qualifying, but results must go their way in order for either nation to finish second.

That concludes day seven. Come back tomorrow for the result from Argentina v Germany in Group H as the group stage begins to reach its climax.

HOSTS RUSSIA CRASH OUT; SPAIN REACH LAST 16, GERMANY FACE ELIMINATION

GROUP A CLIMAX - RUSSIA OUT South Korea 1-1 Russia; Holland 2-1 Senegal
Russia had to beat South Korea to stay in their home tournament and things got off to the perfect start in Volgograd when they took the lead. However, disaster struck midway through the game when South Korea equalised, and they held on for a 1-1 draw to secure their passage in to the last 16 at the expense of the hosts. Trouble at the final whistle as missiles were thrown from sections of the home crowd in the direction of the South Korean players. That result meant Holland were guaranteed top spot, but they did their job anyway by beating Senegal 2-1. A late consolation not enough for Senegal, who go home without a point.

GROUP B CLIMAX - SPAIN THROUGH Serbia 0-2 Spain; Ghana 3-3 Japan
Spain withstood early pressure against Serbia before taking control and winning 2-0 to secure their place in the last 16, and set up a tie against Holland in Sochi next week. Spain were the better side overall and deserved their win. Ghana needed a point to finish top of Group B and twice lead already eliminated Japan, before their opponents roared back and took the lead after twice equalising. A powerful finish went in off the post, before a last-gasp equaliser ensured a thrilling 3-3 draw and Ghana progress as Group B winners to face South Korea in the last 16.

Argentina 1-0 Germany
Germany are left in deep trouble after falling to defeat against Argentina in Yekaterinburg. One goal was enough to win it for Argentina, who are almost through - they must avoid defeat against Italy in the last game.

Italy 4-1 USA
Italy put themselves second in Group H on goal difference with a scintillating performance to thrash a sorry USA. It sets up the remaining two games in Group H nicely - if Italy beat Argentina and Germany beat USA, then Italy, Germany and Argentina will all be on 6 points. USA can still go through if they win against Germany and Argentina beat Italy. Should both games finish as draws, Italy would finish ahead of Germany on goal difference. It's going to be a close one, which should take place on Friday.

LATE GOALS CHANGE COMPLEXION OF GROUP D, LOTS DRAWN TO DECIDE GROUP C SECOND PLACE!

GROUP C CLIMAX Republic of Ireland 0-1 France, Peru 0-0 Costa Rica
A quite incredible start to Wednesday's play from Group C. Not a classic the first match, and we looked to be heading for the first goalless draw of the tournament before a late deflected striker kept up France's 100% winning start as they edged out Ireland, who played really well and deserved something from the game. The real drama comes from Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. Both Peru and Costa Rica were level on points, goal difference and goals scored heading in to this game. That meant that if their match ended as a draw, then lots would have to be drawn to see who progressed. Not a problem, as surely one would go for it and win, right? Wrong. The longer the game wore on the more tense it became, with every team's chance of an attack leading to them not committing too many bodies forward. Costa Rica were denied by a fantastic save from the Peruvian keeper, tipping a shot on to the bar and over for a corner. Had that gone in, Costa Rica would have likely won the game. It ended 0-0, and in the drawing of lots, Peru were selected to finish 2nd in Group C and go through to the last 16! Even more heartbreak for Costa Rica, as that missed chance in the game cost them more dearly than they ever would have expected.

GROUP D CLIMAX Trinidad & Tobago 1-1 Brazil, Cameroon 1-2 Switzerland
Where to start here? All four teams went in to the last round of matches on 3 points. Brazil were top on GD (+1), Switzerland second on goals scored ahead of Trinidad, and Cameroon bottom on GD (-1). Brazil just needed a draw, but fell behind as Trinidad threatened another shock result after beating Switzerland last week. It wasn't to be, as Brazil pushed on an equalised late on, and they knew a point would be enough to take them through on GD. Brazil through, Trinidad must wait for the other result. Because Trinidad scored, that meant a goalless draw in the last game would see Trinidad through on goals scored. A score draw was enough for Switzerland, whilst whoever won between Suiss and Cameroon would top the group. Cameroon had to win. And they dominated from start to, nearly finish, taking the lead after a controversial decision not to give the first shot as the officials didn't deem the ball to be over the line! They kept the ball alive and fired in shortly after to lead 1-0. They were in control but for a late, late counter attack from Switzerland, and a chipped finish got them level which eliminated Trinidad with seconds to play. Switzerland then rubbed salt in the wounds of Cameroon, breaking away again and finishing them off to win the game 2-1. Switzerland through as group winners, Cameroon and Trinidad out.

A quite incredible day of play today. Tomorrow sees England try and progress from Group F. Group E could also go to the wire, but surely nothing like today?! Thanks for reading.
