Help with colours please

Postby Jags79 » 28 Jun 2016, 16:55

Hi everyone,

I've decided to make a Subbuteo cake (don't laugh) for my dad's birthday this year. His team are Hamilton Accies (don't laugh) and I need a team to use as toppers for the cake - ones he can keep. I prefer and I know he will, the classic heavyweight style without logos and stuff but don't want to use second hand ones as its for a cake. So, I've ordered 12 primed AL1s from LPM Online to paint myself. I thought as there's so much white in the strip, primed would be a good start - hope I'm right. Long story short, there's no shops near me selling Humbrol etc paint so I'm looking at their paint chart online wondering which shades of red are best for the shirt, whether the Humbrol flesh colour is as nasty as it looks on screen, whether matt black will do or is coal black better for the boots? Then there's which brown to get for the hair! Is there anyone that can help me choose the right colours? I've put the following in my online shopping basket as they 'look' best:

Humbrol matt acrylic scarlet 60
Humbrol matt acrylic black 33
Humbrol matt acrylic flesh 61 (or is 103 cream better?)
Humbrol matt acrylic brown 186 or there's a 160 German camouflage brown?

I'd like to get it right as I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I know dad would appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Regards,
Jags

Hey Lloydie - thanks so much!

Would you use 61 Flesh? It looks so salmon-y. Thought it might clash with my red and white hoops, lol!

You can add a touch of red to 61, tiny amount to bring it up more

Sorry Lloydie, not seeing 98 in matt acrylic. I'm guessing you use enamels? Looks like I might have to switch between acrylics and enamel to get the best colours in that case. Can I just check, did you mean add white to flesh to tone it down. Would adding red not make the player look quite furious?

Its matt enamel, a good shade of brown for hair and boots,
its add red to the flesh 61

Thanks. One more thing, if that's okay. Is it okay to use Humbrol clear matt acrylic varnish spray on a player that contains matt acrylic paint all over except for hair and boots which are matt enamel?

I cannot say as its something that I have never done, might be worth trying on a spare bit of material just in case.

imo humbrol don't make great acrylics.

use vallejo acrylic, then buy some little pots and mix your own colours.

Hi Ogi,

Thanks for your advice. I'd need to buy these online also so I'd be guessing at which shades to buy. Are you in a position to suggest colours for me and I'll have a look at some online retailers?

Thanks,
Jags

it'll be fine, but again humbrol varnish me not like, and don't like spraying varnish either, no control, you'll miss bits.
