I find Paul's Top Spins are very competetively priced mate.

But as you say Santiagos are also a very good replica.

Here's a team i did this afternoon whilst watching the football.

Original HW Subbuteo figures and bases.

Stripped the figures and used a set of very nice bright orange bases with black discs.

Here is Colombia 1975

here's a team photo

They wore orange for over a decade before reverting back to the more familiar yellow.

I have used all my blank Top Spins and Santiagos up for now but will order some in the near future.

In the meantime i do have a few original Subbuteo Classic HW's i have stripped down ready to paint up. Colombia was the first.

Next up is a Rugby team. Bit of a departure for me.

I was never into Rugby that much as a kid (and still arent really). So didnt really bother too much with Subbuteo Rugby.I had a Rugby box set (Ireland v Wales) and about half a dozen boxed teams (Wigan, Halifax, New Zealand, Australia, Featherstone & Rochdale) i got as a kid but never played with it.

Now i blame Jim (forfoxsake) for this as a couple of years ago he was telling me how he had got into playing it and how fun it was. He put the seed of an idea in my mind.

Anyway last year I decided i would collect some of the Rugby teams i didnt have if i could pick em up cheap enough. I went a bit mad on ebay and within 12 months had collected most of the 1-26 range (and kickers!) and also now have 8 complete box sets!!!! Damn you Jim!

During this collecting i picked up some repaints etc and so i have stripped them down. These are the chunky figures which i think look the best for Rugby and will be painted into teams not in the range.

So here is Argentina -original chunky subbuteo figures and Top Spin replica bases kindly supplied by Paul (lloydie)

Found a set of Top Spins i had missed.

So painted up as York City. Did a York a couple of years ago but wasnt happy with the shade i did.

Pleased with the dark claret i mixed..wanted something a shade darker than your West Ham/Villa/Burnley claret.

I managed to get an hour or so for myself yesterday so painted up this

Dundee 2nd on Top Spin.

A shout to our sponsor Pete at Subbuteo World who does some custom boxes. He recently added about a 100 new teams to the range including a few i suggested (so thank you Pete) including this.

Picked up a paint brush for the first time in almost a year today.

Revived an old battered Ireland R4 rugby set. Turned them into a kit Subbuteo didnt produce in their range...a classic Northampton RUFC.

Complete with a kicker. I still blame Jim (Forfoxsake) for sparking my interest in the rugby sets a few years ago.

What paints and brush sizes do you use?

Hi G

As you can see I paint exclusively classic heavyweight style teams so try to get close to the original HW subbuteo so I use Humbrol (matt) enamel paints (occasionally Revell enamels). Many other painters use these to keep faithful to the originals.

You could use acrylics which are water based so a bit easier to use. Humbrol & Revell also do these and other leading brands are , Vellejo, Tamiya & Citadel (warhammer)

Depends on what you are painting and what you want to do really.

As for brushes over the years I have sometimes gone for cheap brushes and i have also spent small fortunes on occasions. Currently I use some quite inexpensive brushes from 'The Range" store. Mainly 0 or 00 size but sometimes 3/0 or even 5/0 10/0 for fine detail.

Remember you may wish to thin down the paints (for acrylics you can simply add tiny amounts of water -and you can clean your brushes with water as well) (For enamels you need Enamel Thinners)
