World Cup 1966

Postby Gullseye » 10 Jul 2017, 09:18

[attachment=0]image.jpg[/attachmen

With reference to this mighty tome produced by the FA I will be recreating the whole tournament which started on 11 July and culminated with the final on 30 July.

To give England home advantage I will be reducing the number of flicks the opposition attack has in the England half to two flicks per player. There will be a total of 32 games played and I will start with the original 4 groups of 4 teams.

Old heavyweight teams painted by me, boxes and 1966 World Cup balls provided by Ogi.

A great idea. Very good luck with it, sir.

I'm sure I won't be the only one of, shall we say, a certain vintage, who will enjoy reading about it, and following its progress.

So, after fifty-one years, England have finally learned how to outmaneouvre Uruguay's sweeper tactics. Let us hope they haven't peaked too soon.

Yes I'm not too sure what happened in that game. Everything England hit went in and hard as I tried with Uruguay they just got worse. The half time score was only 2-0.

Interestingly all the actual stronger teams won, so there is probably some subconscious bias although you try as hard with both teams. We'll see what happens, England have been given an advantage anyway so you would expect them to do well but they could get unlucky.

Some very competitive games today, which complete the opening group games.

GROUP ONE
FRANCE 3 MEXICO 3 (BOURGOING 2, HAUSER) (REYES 2, HERNANDEZ )

GROUP TWO
SPAIN 2 ARGENTINE 1 (SUAREZ, PEIRO) (MAS)

GROUP THREE
HUNGARY 2 PORTUGAL 2 (ALBERT, MATHESZ) (SIMOES, EUSEBIO)

GROUP FOUR
CHILE 1 ITALY 1 (SANCHEZ) (RIVERA)

NB. Something I had not noticed before is that Argentina was known as Argentine. Wish I had known this before I got OGI to make the team boxes.

Hope the Brazil v Hungary game turned out to be as good as the original, even if Hungary couldn't repeat their win. I still consider that match to have been the game of the Tournament, with Farkas's goal also the beat.

I remember that Hungarian side fondly, and had they not had two unfortunate (or error-prone) goalkeepers, may well have gone all the way. Which one have you selected?

Just spotted that the entire match is on youtube. If you, or anyone else, can put up with old pictures in black and white for ninety minutes, it's certainly worth a watch, or rewatch.

I had Gelei in the Hungarian goal for that one. My memories of the group games are very sketchy. The player I remember most is Eusebio who seemed to move at twice the speed of everybody else.

Completion of second matches in Group Stage

GROUP ONE
MEXICO 0 ENGLAND 1 (Hunt)

GROUP TWO
ARGENTINE 3 WEST GERMANY 3 (Onega,Mas,Perfumo) (Emmerich 2, Haller)

GROUP THREE
PORTUGAL 2 BULGARIA 1 (Eusebio, Coluna) (Kotkov)

GROUP FOUR
ITALY 1 USSR 3 ( Mazzola) (Ponomarev,Banishevskiy,Malofeev)

England scrape through with a deflected goal to win the group. The Germans equalise against Argentine with 6 seconds remaining. Bulgaria and Switzerland go home. Italy will need to win now against North Korea to get to the quarters as the USSR go through.

The format of this tournament made, and still makes, it much easier to follow than today's versions, and just as interesting.

"Italy will need to win now against North Korea to get to the quarters. . . . "

Haven't we heard something like this before? but with the word "only" in front of "need to win". It couldn't happen again, could it?

Yes I agree, but there were more valid reasons to expand it later to include other continents, than what has happened to the European Cup. The Champions League is much less exciting than the old European Cup which only had the real champions.

Day one of the third games in the group stage.

GROUP ONE
MEXICO 2 URUGUAY 2 (Padilla,Borja) (Perez, og Diaz)

GROUP TWO
ARGENTINE 1 SWITZERLAND 1 (Onega) (Quentin)

GROUP THREE
PORTUGAL 3 BRAZIL 0 (Lucas,Eusebio,Simoes)

GROUP FOUR
ITALY 4 NORTH KOREA 4 (Barison 2,Rivera,Mazzola) (Yung Kyoo 2, Seung Hwi, Dong Woon)

Mexico eliminate Uruguay and France will need a better result than a 1-0 defeat against England to pip them for second place.

In Group Two Spain and West Germany both qualify, Argentine and Switzerland go home.

Portugal thrash Brazil to win Group Three, leaving Hungary only needing a draw with Bulgaria to knock out Brazil and take second.

North Korea knock out the Italians in the best game of the tournament so far. USSR win the group but North Korea or Chile can grab second.
