Ref 110 Trivia

Postby sportpsych » 02 Nov 2017, 08:25

Not sure whether this is old news, but in naming the original ref 110, Subbuteo got the club name wrong. In Switzerland there is a Lugano and a Locarno, but no Lugarno as per the Subbuteo references. (Apparently it is however a suburb outside of Sydney, Australia). The correct name for that strip should in fact be Lugano.

Also interesting that the LW version has the ‘V’ on both front and back, whereas the HW only has it on the front.

Back in the day SSG got the information for international kits from the distributors in the various Countries, as opposed to dong their own research and produced teams based on the given data

Another example of Subbuteo's idiosyncrasies of the time.

Team names not quite right, odd choices of teams, variations to kits, some kits not accurate.......the joys of Subbuteo particularly in the HW era. For me it's part of the charm.

One of my favourite Subbuteo items are the full colour poster team colour charts that they did in their catalogues '74-'77 using actual photos of the figures. It stirs memories of my childhood when i would stare at them dreaming of which exotic team would be the next to spend my pocket money on. A St Pauli or a MVV.........fantastic.It was Subbuteo which triggered my fascination with foreign football that has stayed with me all my life.

Btw it was only fairly recently i noticed on those team charts that some references featured different base combos during that period. I had assumed they had just re-used all the photos from the previous years.

Think i have seen a HW Lugano with the V on the backs as well...Skell's ????

nice find Mark

I have always found it strange that no team from the Italian region of Switzerland has ever made a real mark.

Lugano are probably the biggest team from there but havnt really done much. Bellinzona Locarno and Chiasso have spent most of their history outside the top flight.

instead German speaking teams such as Zurich Basel Young Boys and Grasshiopper have dominated and to a lesser extent French region teams like Servette and Lausanne.

Possibly younger players in those regions - if talented enough - have gravitated rather towards the more lucrative Italian and French leagues / clubs which are so close by...?

perhaps...you may have a point.

I know Lugano have historically had young players on loan from Serie A clubs.
