Building a Stadium

Post by davieb1972 » 03 Jan 2019, 18:13

Hi All,

I have been drawn into the world of Subbuteo after a 30 year exodus and all the Stadiums that people have built are stunning and really grabbed my imagination!!

Now I would love to build the ground of my football love, Ibrox, but things like scale, materials, space etc ask whether its a job too big and ambitious for a rookie like myself!!

Any advice before I start is appreciated so I can decide to go far it or design one myself 😊

Cheers

Davie

try and avoid cardboard as it always warps, plastrut and k&s metals make useful pre formed sections, old fluorescent light diffusers make corrugated steel/acrylic sheeting, you are working in roughly 4mm to the foot scale, you can get steel rules ready calibrated, loads of good materials can be bought from these guys http://www.squirestools.com/

as a modeller i take inspiration from various places, the leitch main stand at ibrox pre club deck would make a fantastic scratch built model but it is a massive job for a newbie, however treat modelling as eating an elephant, if you think an elephant is massive then your right but break it down, today you eat a toe etc it becomes doable it just takes time. the main thing is to enjoy yourself, there is times you will swear at a project

a lad on here has built a version of roker park which was a leitch design, there is photos of it on here

Hi Aland,

I have did bits and bobs in the past so it would be a real challenge to takeon the full stadium but as you say that main stand is quite something.

Im glad you mentioned it as its given me the idea of just doing the main stand itself, i would just have to get my head around doing an accurate scale with the subbuteo pitch that might be the hardest part for me.

I loved how the stadium was back in the 80s, the Facade has always been special but i loved the old fashioned commentary gantry on the main stand too.

This person built the Ibrox stand, as well as Highbury, Villa and Fulham stands.

the good thing about ibrox is that it is still there and if you live relatively close you can visit, take loads of photos and do a drawing of the facade, get the tape measure out and measure things like doors and windows, the roof will be a pain as there is so few leitch stands left to work out the framework, either dens park dundee or somerset park ayr, take photos and just upscale them for ibrox, the firhill stand might not be leitch but it is in his style

just remember you are making a representation, if it looks right then your laughing

Pudski they are amazing is that someone in this group? What brilliant detail in those especially the main stand at Ibrox.

Aland I live about 200 miles away unfortunately!!

I can get photos and trt and work of that.

I do have the benifit of this though for scale, the club issued this when it was redeveloped early 80s.
