In theory, no. But, as with a lot of things, it's a bit fiddly and requires practice.
It obviously gives a more realistic result but, imho, they lose a bit of their charm, somehow.

If that's your thing they are well worth a look.
Personally when it comes to Subbuteo I am firmly stuck in the mid 70's
