Solo League dusty old tables

Post by Ralph1 »

So I'm struggling for time taking photos of the teams just now but I had a quick opportunity to take a snap of these this afternoon ...

They've been out of use for a few years as the plastic tabs are getting too brittle for regular movement ... in fact looking at which teams are in each division on the photo I'd guess they've been untouched for about three seasons - where does the time go ? ... hmm no idea !

We have points tabs to put on the board next to each team so in the past they'd be moved every week like the old team tabs but as I say the plastic is past it so they are more of a display thing now .. and although most of the kits were cut straight from the 78-81 cats yes quite a lot of those colour kits were handpainted on a sheet of ref 21s we created and copied .. no wonder we both wear glasses now !

Looks good.

I've been buying retro style league ladders from Retrocrafts since I discovered them three years ago. They also offer customized versions and if I ever get going with my solo play, I might buy a set for my league.

Now that might be an option for my two Scottish Divisions
- I did have a couple of magnetic ladders but I’ve got absolutely no idea where they went. I think they were bought from an advert in Shoot, you could get them as blanks then add the good old dymo tape names.Strangely I do have a few of the team tabs somewhere - the boards were green and I remember that they came with a wipe clean felt tip to write the points totals on the board . Amazing what you can remember from forty plus years ago but last week is a mystery ?!

i would love to know where these team names come from? It appears they are an amalgamation of real team name,s but would be interesting to know the history behind them and why you chose to go with fictional rather than real teams?

I think it would mess with my mind as I would be constantly trying to revert the name back to a real team :D

As far as the English League goes the League dates back to 1955 . It began as Leagues do with just one division and a selection of names chosen from 1950s comics and towns my Dad might have passed through when going away on family holidays. So a few of the English clubs ,like Grantham for instance, are of course real places but in fact represent somewhere else (Grimsby) . In the early days they were also given whatever random kit my Dad might have fancied and was able to buy in town. As the League expanded my Dad and his friend who also ran a solo league started to devise additional names and match their exisiting ones to real football clubs so we ended up with a mix of the obvious playing in the correct kits and the not so obvious playing in their original kits. - Reality gradually crept in and I would be partly to blame as a young lad by asking the pair of them who was this team who was that team why dont they have the right kit etc etc  So some of the clubs you would guess quite easily however Dutton Albion (Dutton is a village in the Ribble Valley) playing in ref 8 are not quite so obviously ... drum roll ... errrr Cardiff City   ... basically when they started expanding they didn't want to lose certain names or change the colours

My Scottish League which I began in 1976 is more obviously based upon the real clubs North of the Border - every summer I look at Dalkeith (who were just a name to make up the numbers originally but I now see them as Leith) and Blantyre (Brechin) and think I should change them as they are the only two names in my League who are represented by decent clubs in the real world (plus Blantyre is a much bigger town than Brechin) but the League is 45 years old this time and tradition is tradition so I keep them in !! ... I don't like change in my League nobody ever leaves or joins but I do change the kits

Why fictional ? well all I can say is if you have fictional names it doesn't seem quite so ridiculous when Corbridge (Carlisle) end up as League Champions or some big club ends up in Division 3

At the end of the day it’s part nostalgia part escape I guess .. when I think about my clubs I tend to think about the kits and grounds of the 1970s and 80s

Thanks for sharing the info about your leagues and teams, I love to read the stories about other players and how their leagues developed. It’s nice to see that your league came about and grew over many years.
Do you have a list of your league champions over the seasons?

Yes we’ve got full records for the English League although the League Chairman (ie not me  ) is slowly coming round to my way of thinking on record keeping . I just keep a record of League Champions and Cup Final results for my Scottish Divisions and as we haven’t typed up the English records since 1990   (initially pending transferring them to a word processor) they are also going to get simplified one day soon out of pure necessity

Sounds fantastic.

I used to keep my records in a text book, but league tables became a pain to update as I would have to rub it out and write it out again. I now keep my results on a website so it’s easier to maintain, I can go back and look at historic results easily, plus I can now access it anywhere :-)

Yes there is a lot to be said for modern technology .. I use fixturelist.com now instead of handwriting the fixtures mainly because I’ve got arthritis and the old handwriting has suffered a bit but also because I realised that I can save them as Pdf files and create booklets for each division that use very little paper

Tables I do the old way on paper .. I just keep a running total and a results grid then write up the full tables at the end of the season ..

I also have a similar file where honours are listed by club. Plus each season when I make out a new squad book I note down how long the club has been in that divison where they finished the previous season and which round of the Cups they got to , as I realised that was all I ever looked up when I kept full records .You'll notice that the big two are relatively succesful as their calculated results are weighted - not so their games that I play physically but it works well for me because they by no means win everything... 2019 was something of a surprise  I think the little plastic men would still be dancing in the streets of Coatbridge

Next job is to do the same with the English records .. got to be easier than trying to type up the thirty one years we've got stuffed in a drawer

Do you need to be crazy to play solo leagues ? ... No but it definitely helps
