Maybe Ultravox Jon, started very avant guard (spelling?)...just pre punk 75, then went punk (er) for the second/third album, then J.Foxx left to go totally electro new wave..the arrival of Midge Ure who everyone slates was, i think, the best move Ultravox made, his vocal range was far superior to Foxx's and totally lifted the sound. He made SUCH a difference it almost seemed like the musicians raised their game to meet the challenge of the better vocals.

Japan i have a lot of time for and do play their stuff with fair consistency...all the bands around that period were so far better at writing lyrics i kind of wonder what happened to the male brain around 1985 to produce such utterly meaningless lyrics from then till now.
A creative gene was lost somehow it seems, across the board, instrument playing musicians too.
Re Japan, Quiet Life and Ghosts a stand-out from their catalogue, but there are many hidden early gems...certainly in my top 5 of that genre.
