Doubts with two rugby team
Hi folks
I have doubts with two rugby teams. A possible variation of ref. R10, but with sky blue stripes and not the usual blue. It is surely original, not repainted. Could it be an Argentina even if it is not in the catalogue? And also a ref. R2 England featuring the badge of the rose, it does not seem repainted but in this case I am not sure. Have you seen similar teams around? Thanks

Re: Doubts with two rugby team
You are right to have doubts. I'm no expert but they look like repaints.

They're not repaints.
They are new teams painted on topspin bases and figures.
I believe they are new items painted by lloydie1109 on eBay.
He does a range of current rugby league and union teams plus some retro items.

These teams come from France, they are original Subbuteo 100% from the seventies. Not a replica in any case, possibly the original owner added the badge on England. Argentina has not been repainted, it is original factory painting. Also boxes are fully original and does have original refs. I know llodie1109 and he confirmed he has nothing to do with those teams.

Maybe coming from France, they could have been painted from the French Delacoste factory, as Peter Upton stated in the Rugby section of his website. Very typical from Delacoste.

Could it be Cambridge University rather than Argentina?

Re: Doubts with two rugby team
Sorry to be a pain about this.
They are not original Subbuteo Rugby bases. They look like Topspin or Santiago bases.
The semi circular cut outs in the base are different on the original Subbuteo bases, they are more rounded toward the ends of the semi circle.
Your photos are excellent and highlight this very well.
There are a number of people out there who paint figures on both bases other than Lloydie 1109. I have painted a number of teams myself which were sold to an Italian collector. Mainly union teams from the 70s and 80s.
Delacoste items were generally painted in gloss enamels and not very well. Also the boxes in both football and rugby tended to have a catalogue number that began with a 6 and had the Delacoste name and Giraffe logo either on the box top or end.
All the same they are two very nice teams.
