F.A.Cup. Semi-Finals:

Greyston Town 1 (Sheedy), Iveley Park 2 (Burnside, Stonebridge). (after extra time).

Pressley Rangers 0, Hinton United 2 (Bolasie, Ferguson).

In the first match, Greyston had much the better of the first half and led at the interval. They are not, however, having a good season, and when your luck's out things often go against you, and Iveley equalised midway through the second half with a fine solo goal.
Both teams went close in extra time, and it was Iveley who were able to take one of their chances, when Ian Stonebridge somehow wriggled through the narrowest of gaps between the central defenders to score the decisive goal.

In the second match, Hinton's direct game never allowed their opponents to settle, as every time Pressley lost possession, the ball was quickly back around their own penalty area. On this occasion the long ball game overcame the close-passing one.

We hope for an exciting final, also between teams with very contrasting styles of play.

Before then, there is much to be settled in the thirty remaining league matches.

Regular followers of the league's fortunes will be aware that all the teams have their own formations, which evolve from time to time, and the players date back as far as 1947, the year Subbuteo first appeared. In recent times, these teams haven't been published, so it is possibly an appropriate time to show the three teams who have won their divisions.

Eastroke United are the only side who play in the traditional w-m formation, with wing halves and inside forwards, a system which certainly suits the flats' game.
This season's team, in 1-11 order: Gordon West; Matt Jackson, Neil Pointon; Marouane Fellaini, Dave Watson, Idrissa Gueye; Pat Nevin, Ross Barkley, Alex Young, James McCarthy, Derek Temple.

Western Villa's formation is something of a compromise between 4-2-4 and 4-3-3, with numbers 10 and 11 interchangeable between the roles of attacking midfielder/inside forward, and orthodox left winger. We'll write it out as 4-2-4 (you will need a very long memory to remember one or two of these players!)
Team: Dave MacLaren; David Worrell, Andy Nelson, Adrian Burrows, Mick Horswill; Carl Fletcher, Lilian Nalis; Gorgon Astall, Michael Evans, Cliff Jackson, Garry Nelson.

Ellerfield Athletic, possibly surprise Div 3 winners, play a fairly rigid 4-3-3 system, lining up in three almost straight lines across the field. They don't have traditional wingers, but their full backs are encouraged to get forward as often as possible.
Team: Kyle Letheren; Kevin Smart, Mike Ham, Nauris Bulvitis, Paul Williams; Rat Lugg, Kevin Summerfield, Doug Collins; Lewis Alessandra, Rhys Griffiths, Alan Banks.

There is now just one match to be played in BL11: the Cup Final, which is likely to be the last match played with flats for the foreseeable future.
Result and report to follow.

F.A. Cup Final:

Iveley Park 3 (Burnside, Robertson, Stonebridge), Hinton United 0.

Although both of these two sides each play a formation described as 4-2-4, they are very different.

Hinton Utd still use their long-established formation with three centre forwards, with an advanced winger on the right, and an attacking full back on the left. They are direct and always dangerous opponents, if only because of weight of numbers around the opposition's goal.

Iveley Park use their central strikers to help out in their midfield passing moves, and play from deeper. Often, their most advanced players are the two old-fashioned wingmen.

An intriguing, open, tactical contest was anticipated, and this match certainly didn't disappoint.

One weakness of Hinton's formation is the amount of space behind their front players, and Iveley, as expected, passed the ball about in midfield, as though they were waiting for scoring opportunity to appear. On this occasion, it worked perfectly for them as there defenders also stuck to their tasks, keeping the opposing strikers well marked.

Iveley deservedly led at halftime through David Burnside. Not only was their passing game working well, Hinton were unable to create a single realistic scoring opportunity, other than speculative long-range efforts from wide areas. The pattern of play continued throughout the second half, and goals in the last quarter, from full back George Robertson, and striker Ian Stonebridge, made the final score a fair reflection of the match.

It may appear to have been easy for Iveley Park, but we can't help thinking the game's dynamic would have been very different had Hinton managed to score before Iveley went two up.

This match will be remembered for some very fine football, especially from the winners, although for the neutral, there wasn't an exciting finish.

Teams:
Iveley Park (4-2-4): Martin Hodge; George Robertson, David Provan, Mark Smith, Doug Baird; Lee Carsley, John Ebbrell; Barrie Jones, Ian Stonebridge, David Burnside, Alex Govan.

Hinton Utd (4-2-4): David Lawson; Terry Darracott, Ryan Edwards, Sonny Bradley, Steve Morgan; Mike Bernard, Dan Gosling; Yannick Bolasie, Alex Jackson, Duncan Ferguson, Steve Perrin.
