Italy vs Sweden (Continued)...

The game continued to ebb and flow until the final minute when Italy's high pressing paid off and Jan Olsson fouled Domenghini 30 yards from goal and up-stepped Luigi Riva to blast the free kick over the Swedish wall and into the roof of the net. The Italians win this epic match 3-2.

3rd June 1970 - Estadio Jalisco, Guadalajara - Group C - Brazil v Czechoslovakia

Brazil - Ref 050
Czechoslovakia - Delacoste 656.522 (Marseille)

A decent crowd in excess of 50,000 in Guadalajara turned out to see this eagerly awaited clash between two footballing teams.

Czechoslovakia scored first with a lovely move down their left.Václav Migas dribbled out of defence and swerved expertly around Jairzinho before releasing Ladislav Petráš and, as Carlos Alberto rushed out to cover he slipped a pass to Adamec who beat Felix with the power of his shot, despite the covering efforts of Everaldo.

Things got worse for the South Americans just before half time as they threw men forward in search of the equaliser, the Czechs broke down the right and a slide rule pass inside full back Brito set up Petráš who finished expertly across Felix for 2-0. Lots of work to do during the interval for Brazil coach, Mario Zagallo.

However the Czechs simply got better after the break and some of their inter play was mesmerising, but Tostao finally got Brazil back into the game by sheer will and determination. Carrying the ball the length of the pitch before finding Pele, who finished in a similar fashion to that of Petráš earlier.

The Brazilians now poured forward looking for the leveller and, when a long ball downfield found Tostao, his cross-field pass found Pele on the left. His inch perfect pass back across the box set up Rivelino, but Viktor pushed his shot onto the post and the chance was gone. Czechoslovakia ran out 2-1 winners which, on merit, they just about deserved.

It's good to see the tournament getting into full swing and producing some quality football, after the travel difficulties some teams had in getting there.

3rd June 1970 - Estadio Nou Camp, León - Group D - West Germany v Morocco

Again, a modest provincial crowd turned out in Leon to watch Morocco's first World Cup Finals appearance and they witnessed the North Africans take a shock lead when Said Ghandi passed forward to Mohammed Houmane Jarir. The pass was too far to his right but the Raja Casablanca forward performed a brilliant boomerang flick to set himself up for a shot which he guided past Klaus Fichtel and inside Sepp Maier's near post. A shock lead on paper, but not really against the run of play.

The Moroccans were causing the West Germans some problems, but they managed an equaliser late in the half when, after some good interplay from a short corner between Haller & Beckenbauer, the ball was squared to Gerd Müller who lashed the ball past keeper, Ben Kassou.

West Germany took the lead with 12 minutes to go when Overath and Haller played keep-ball down the left and eventually presented Siegfried Held with chance to shoot but his angle was blocked by Kacem Slimani. Held decided to shoot anyway, perhaps hoping to nick a corner but his shot canoned of the unfortunate Slimani and looped up and over the keeper into the net.

Morocco pushed hard for the equaliser but the West Germans held on for the narrow win and will need to play better in the next game if they are to progress to the knockout stages.

Thanks again, BR.

Yes it's true the Bulgarians are still on the tarmac in Sofia, and show no signs of getting off the ground anytime soon.

Two Ref 152's have appeared on eBay lately, both from the same seller, Spinbowler, who has a very bad rep on here, (it's almost as if he's reading the Forum and knows he has a willing buyer! ;-) )

The first looked poor and had a heavily re-glued player that he failed to mention in the description, none of which stopped it from going for 50 quid! :?

Now he has another one on there which seems to have two distinctly different shades of green on it!

I despair! ](*,)
