Brazil v Peru (Continued)...

Minutes later however, Brazil were ahead when a corner was headed out to Rivelino and he lashed home from 16 yards past the despairing dive of the Peruvian stopper.

Tostão nearly made it two before half time driving narrowly wide of the post, but it remained 1-0 at the interval.

Brazil came out firing after the break and a defensive mistake by Nicolas Fuentes gave Pelé a long range opportunity...

Brazil v Peru (Continued)...

Peru came straight back at Brazil from the restart with Leon and Cubillas neatly interchanging passes which saw Cubillas negate Marco Antonio's attempted block by swerving around him...

and dispatching his shot back across Felix and into the corner, wrongfooting the Fluminense keeper in the process.

2-1 and game on!

But rather than sit back and try to defend what they had, Brazil went hunting for the goal that would give them some breathing space and, after their third successive corner was flicked on by Gerson...

Peru huffed and puffed for the two minutes that remained but Brazil never looked like conceding and marched on to the semi-finals.

Hi Ralph

I have to say I was a bit wary, having always played with 18mm FF balls, but you get used to it.

My initial concern was that I wouldn't be able to get enough power or 'air' on my shots (because of the slight increase in weight) but that proved to be unfounded.

The ball also rolls pretty straight and true, even on long 'slow' passes.

I haven't noticed any difference from the FF's which I could put down to the change in ball type, and not to the incompetence of the user ;-)

As an added bonus, when you catch one right, the decals allow you to see how much swerve you've imparted to your shots, which looks amazing as you smash one into the 'top bins'!

Having lost their home advantage, Mexico had to play away from the huge fervent crowds of the Estadio Azteca, but this didn't prevent them from making the early running in this quarter final.

After their second successive corner the Mexicans toyed with the Italian defence who constantly blocked off any shooting opportunities. However Aaron Padilla decided he'd run out of patience and simply blasted a shot which hit Pierluigi Cera and sailed over Albertosi and into the net.

The Italians simply returned the favour with the last kick of the half when Angelo Domenghini fed Alessandro Mazzola and his shot again deflected off Mario Perez and over Calderon.

Italy contuned the trend when, early in the second half, Tarcisio Burgnich saw an opportunity for a long pass downfield, almost from his own goal line.

The pass was beautifully executed and, from Mazzola's resulting layoff, Roberto Boninsegna smashed a shot which was again deflected, this time off Jose Vantolra, giving Calderon no chance.

The game was crying out for a quality goal that reflected all the neat build-up play and it finally came when Mario Bertinin played a superb through ball for Luigi Riva...

Mexico immediately went in search of a foothold in the game and Javier Valdivia, undeterred by Italy's solid defence, swerved around two defenders to set up a golden chance

but Albertosi dived acrobatically to tip his shot onto the post, the shot almost rebounding back in off Facchetti.

That was Mexico's last chance and Italy were through to the semi-finals at the expense of the heartbroken hosts.

Yeah it's a nice kit, Ralph.

As far as I know, this is the last World Cup they used it at, preferring the green top / white shorts kit which they'd been running side-by-side with this one up to 1970.

14th June 1970 - Estadio Azteca, Mexico City - World Cup Quarter Final - Uruguay v USSR

This game was 'end-to-end' from the first whistle with the midfield being by-passed and both teams trying to find the 'killer pass' to the forward areas.

One such move finally paid off just before the interval when Vladimir Kaplichny split the Uruguayan defence with a long pass to Gennady Yevriuzhikin and he squared to Vitaly Kmelnitsky who took a touch to get the ball out of his feet and shot neatly inside Mazurkiewicz's near post.

After the interval, Uruguay pushed hard for a way back into the tie and were presented with a golden opportunity when the Soviets completely vacated the central area of defence and Julio Morales raced onto the ball.

Uruguay v USSR (Continued)

The Soviets simply couldn't cover all angles and Juan Mujica punished them with an accurate shot into the corner of the net past the despairing dive of Kavazashvili

Uruguay now went all out for the winner. Luis Cabilla played a clever pass outside the Soviet left back, Valentin Afonin, who was caught infield. Ildo Maneiro glided onto the ball with a deft touch to set up a long range shot, but Afonin recovered his position and would have felt confident he could block the shot

However Maneiro unleashed an unstoppable rising drive from 25 yards which dipped under Kavazashvili's crossbar and sent the Uruguayans wild with delight

Uruguay advance to an all-South American semi-final and the crestfallen Soviets face the long trip home.

17th June 1970 - Estadio Jalisco, Guadalajara - World Cup Semi Final - Brazil vs Uruguay

Brazil v Uruguay Coin Toss.jpg
Brazil v Uruguay Coin Toss.jpg (156.76 KiB) Viewed 1057 times

The first time these teams had met in a World Cup match since the infamous final in the Maracanã in 1950, when the shock of defeat to Uruguay silenced the 210,000-strong crowd and led numerous Brazilians to commit suicide in the aftermath.

Only 51,000 turned out for this game but the nerves would have been jangling amongst those who remembered, as it was the Uruguayans who started the match the better, and carved out the first real chance when Julio Morales charged onto a loose ball and swerved around Brito's attempted block, only to see his shot canon off the post and away to safety.

Morales's Shot Hits the Post.jpg

But the sign of a good team is to score when not playing at your best and Brazil showed what a class act they are when Gerson slipped the ball into the path of Rivelino 25 yards from goal. The body position of Uruguay captain, Ignacio Ubiñas, showed Revelino he was expecting a curling shot the far corner...

but the Corinthians striker wrong footed him and the keeper by placing his shot clinically inside the near post to give the Brazilians the lead.

As Uruguay pushed hard for an equaliser before the break, Brazil broke with lightning speed and almost made it two, but Pelé's shot grazed the outside of a post and the half time whistle was blown. There was work to do for Uruguay coach Juan Hohberg, because as things stood, his team were going out.

Brazil v Uruguay (Continued)

The second half was a real end-to-end spectacle with Uruguay straining every sinew to get back into it and Brazil breaking quickly on them when attacks broke down.

Both teams had chances. Uruguay; Ildo Maneiro firing wide from a narrow angle and Brazil, at the death, when a long range shot from Jairzinho flew past Mazurkiewicz's right hand post with the keeper beaten.

The Ghost of 1950 had finally been laid to rest and the Brazilians could look forward to their 4th final.

In an electric atmosphere in the Azteca, in front of 102,000 spectators, this all European semi final started at break-neck pace and it wasn't long before the deadlock was broken when, after Italy's first corner, some simply horrendous defending by Willi Schulz gifted Roberto Boninsegna with a straightforward shooting opportunity...

A half-time scoreline which may have raised a few eyebrows.

The West Germans came into the game more after the break and almost got on the scoreboard after a brilliant solo run down the right by Jürgen Grabowski forced Albertosi into a smart save.

However the keeper then rolled the ball out to Giacinto Facchetti and the Italian skipper played it down the left side into the path of Luigi Riva, who swerved beautifully onto the ball.

The West Germans were sure that Riva would shoot and Schnellinger moved across to block...
