You see the same thing in Rugby League. Teams playing 3 extra home and away games because there's only 12 teams in the league but the chairmen want 14 home games. Players play too many games, there's not enough rest, players in the International season are playing in the old season after their clubmates have started training for the next one !

The root problem is the full time game. Players want paying all year so chairmen want games all year to provide revenue.
