After a busy real-life week, play resumed with the final games in the Europe and RoW groups.

In the RoW section Chile had nudged ahead with a game to go and held top spot with a 2-0 win against Peru, eliminating Peru in the process. Brazil had slipped to bottom spot but a win against Zaire would have secured a quarter-final spot. However, a 2-2 draw against a resurgent Zaire side has seen Brazil finish bottom and the Africans advancing. Uruguay and Argentina also played out a 2-2 draw, eliminating Argentina.

In Europe, Italy had already won the group after 4 games, leaving 2 qualifying spots up for grabs. Despite 2 previous quite heavy defeats, Germany were still in contention as they took on Spain who could also qualify with a win of their own. But it was Germany who got the only goal of the game, leap-froggin Spain and France to finish 2nd.

They are joined in the quart-finals by Holland. They final game was away to Belgium who were already out and playing for pride. Despite putting in a solid performance, it Holland who grabbed the only goal of the game, courtesy of a shot that bounced back off the post before cannoning into the goal off the keeper's back. Typical of Belgium's luck in the tournament.

With a win against Italy, France could have advanced. After taking a first half lead it looked like the French would move on. However, a late equaliser extinguished their hopes as the game ended 1-1.

Under way in the 1st quarter-final and a fairly nervy and disjoint performance from both sides. Wales struck after 12 minutes with a low shot finding the bottom corner of Holland's net. Pressure from Holland after that but for no reward, their best chance producing a double save by the Welsh keeper.

Half-time: Wales 1-0 Holland

Teams out for the second half and a much more controlled game by both sides. An even contest with the occasional chance at each end. Holland hit a post while Wales are denied by a fine save low down by the Dutch keeper. Wales remain resolute at the back and keep Holland at bay and it's the Welsh who advance.

Final score: Wales 1-0 Holland

A first half dominated by Chile as they encamped in England's half. While they looked busy outside of the box, they did little to threaten the England goal.

Their cavalier approach, however, back-fired as from their first attack of the half, England got the benefit of a fortunate bounce off the post that took the ball across the line. Against the run of play and it's Chile 0-1 England.

Chile wasted a direct free-kick and couldn't find an effective finish. But in the final minute of the half they found a gap in England's defence and an accurate finish inside the far post got Chile back in the game.

Chile dominated the 2nd half in terms of possession and England looked to break but the sides remained deadlocked at 1-1.

Extra time and the pattern remains the same and neither side has the killer touch. And then, with under 2 minutes of the 2nd half of extra-time remaining, Chile find a gap in England's defence and strike a fine goal. With so little time left Chile just need to hang on to the ball, which they do. And England go home.

An excellent first half with Italy and Uruguay both up for this one. A tough battle in midfield keeping both defences on their toes and both defences holding firm. A chance for Uruguay was turned away smartly by Italy's keeper but from the resulting throw-in, Uruguay found space to break and a shot snuck inside the post past the outstretched fingers of the keeper.

A crazy second half during which Uruguay took the game by the scruff of the neck. 5 minutes in Italy left themselves open and the shot is accurately slipped into the corner for a 2-0 Uruguay lead.

Italy are stunned. Uruguay get through again. The shot is brilliantly saved onto the bar but the striker gets to the rebound and slips in a 3rd for Uruguay.

It's all over now, surely? No, the Italians come back. It's do or die. A free kick on the edge of the box is cleared. More pressure, then a goal 3-1.

Moments later, a gap on the edge of the box and a shot. 3-2 as it screams in. That's it, though, as with a just a minute to play Uruguay play keep-ball and Italy, unbeaten in the group stage, are shocked by the unfancied South Americans.

Then out of the blue a bit of "Route 1' from Zaire completely catches the German defence flat-footed and the shot finds the corner with the keeper nowhere. Is there another upset on the cards?

The shock's on as Zaire take a 2-0 lead 2 minutes into the second half. And as with their group play, they are looking a solid unit.

The Germans try to get some pressure on but the Zaire back line stays solid. With 7 minutes to go, however, the Germans get back in it with a pile-driver that gives the keeper no chance. 2-1 now and the Germans are looking strong. But the Zaire players remain as a unit and with 5 minutes still on the clock, are happy to play keep-ball. And their disciplined approach pays off as they close their opponents down and out to move on to a semi-final date with Chile.

Final score: Germany 1-2 Zaire

And we're back. Semi-Final Day with Wales taking on Uruguay in the 1st match of the day.

Wales take a conservative approach from the start, allowing Uruguay possession. It seems to pay off as the South Americans can't convert their pressure into goals. Then a break by Wales but the shot goes the wrong side of the post.

Wales start to push and with a few minutes left in the half they open the scoring with an unstoppable shot to the top corner. But straight from the restart, Uruguay waltz through the Welsh defence and in the blink of an eye it's 1-1.

Wales push forward looking for the equaliser as Uruguay have 9 men behind the ball. With a minute left, the South Americans break forward with little Welsh cover and score a 3rd, ensuring their place in the Final

This was a tight game. Attacking play from both sides with sound defence keeping the chances to a minimum. The deadlock was broken after 8 minutes. A corner for Chile opportunistically flicked in at the near post to open the scoring. Chile score a second before the break and this tie is over, surely?

As they've done throughout the tournament, Zaire came back at their opponents with venom and pulled a goal back less than 2 minutes into the 2nd half. Chile still looked in control but the Africans were not holding back and scored a 2nd to level the scores, forcing extra-time.

Full-Time: Chile 2-2 Zaire

Extra-time proved a more cautious affair. Chile had the edge and beat the keeper twice only to see the ball cannon off the post both times. Aside from this Zaire held firm and the tie is to be decided on penalties.

With each side scoring 2 of their first 4 kicks it's down to the last round. Zaire are denied by Chile's keeper but Chile score to win the tie-breaker 3-2 and advance to play Uruguay in the Final.

Result: Chile win 3-2 on pens

The Final: Uruguay v. Chile.

Chile had beaten Uruguay 3-2 in the group stages in a cracking game that had everything and expectations were high that the Final might be a similarly open affair. Several chances in the first few minutes suggested it might, with both keepers being worked. But as the first half settled down, we were watching a more cagey affair, with both defences being well-organized. Two good chances for Uruguay towards the end of half but no goals.

Half-Time: Uruguay 0-0 Chile

2nd half and Chile came out on the attack, forcing the keeper into a save and concede a corner. But as the half progressed the balance remained as neither side could force the issue. Close to the mid-point of the half, though, Uruguay pressed. A break from midfield found a gap and the shot produced a throw-in deep in Chile's half.

Uruguay now took a grip and played effective keep-ball to frustrate the Chileans. A last gasp half-chance was all Chile could muster and it's Uruguay who win and become Champions of my Global Nations Cup Tournament.

EPILOGUE

Playing this tournament has been a nice way to spend some time over the last 4 weeks or so. It began as simply a British Home Internationals event, a chance to use the 4 international sides that I repainted to the new strips worn back in '74.

But then I got to thinking which other unique international teams do I have and came up with a "Home Internationals" for Europe and a "Home Internationals" for South America, plus Zaire, and then having a play-off. I didn't want to do a full-blown World Cup as that would be extra matches and also using various teams that share the same or similar colours. So this was a way to have play with teams that are used more infrequently than others.

Having the chance to report the matches in this thread has also been fun, along with throwing in the various pictures. I did similar in the Subbuteo Alive and Kicking Group on Facebook.

Thanks for looking. Hope you enjoyed it.
